A major change has been introduced to the governance framework of Allahabad University, enabling the reappointment of the Vice-Chancellor—an option previously explicitly barred.

Earlier Provision (Before Amendment):
Under Statute 2, Clause (4) of the Allahabad University Act 2005, the Vice-Chancellor could hold office for a period of five years from the date of assuming charge or until attaining the age of 65 years, whichever occurred earlier.

The statute clearly stated that the Vice-Chancellor would not be eligible for reappointment.

Revised Provision (After Amendment):
Following the amendment to Statute 2, Clause (4), the Vice-Chancellor may now hold office for a period of five years from the date of assuming charge or until attaining the age of 70 years, whichever occurs earlier.

Importantly, the revised clause specifies that the Vice-Chancellor shall be eligible for reappointment.

This amendment to Statute 2, Clause (4), was formally notified by the Registrar on 27 November, marking a significant shift in the university’s administrative structure.

According to the Office Correspondent in Prayagraj, the amendment has officially opened the door for reappointment of the Vice-Chancellor at Allahabad University—something that the earlier version of the statute had prohibited.

Registrar Prof. Ashish Khare issued the notification on 27 November, outlining the changes made in Statute 2, Clause (4). Experts believe the revision will strengthen administrative continuity and stability, while supporting uninterrupted academic progress within the university.

The development has also generated considerable discussion on campus.

The current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sangita Srivastava, completed her term on 29 November.

However, her tenure has been extended until further orders by the President of India, who also serves as the Visitor of the University.

The Ministry of Education had recently sent a communication to the university regarding this extension.

Allahabad University PRO Prof. Jaya Kapoor has confirmed the amendment to Statute 2, Clause (4), of the Allahabad University Act 2005.
