Vehicles to Be Barred on Phaphamau Bridge in Prayagraj from September 1 for atleast fifteen days, for Repairs
Prayagraj: In a step towards ensuring road safety, authorities have announced a six-month traffic ban on the historic Phaphamau Bridge over the Ganga River, starting September 1.
The decision comes in light of structural damage to the bridge, which has been in service for decades and is now in urgent need of repairs.
From September 1, all vehicular movement on the Phaphamau Bridge will be completely prohibited for at least fifteen days.
The district administration and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have jointly decided to shut the bridge for reinforcement and structural restoration work.
Traffic Diversion Plan
Traffic police, in consultation with PWD (Public Works Department) and highway authorities, have devised alternative routes for commuters traveling from Prayagraj to Phaphamau and beyond.
Vehicles will be diverted to Shastri Bridge and other nearby routes to ease congestion during the repair period.
This diversion plan is part of a broader initiative to ensure uninterrupted connectivity while addressing safety concerns raised after multiple inspections revealed severe deterioration in the bridge’s foundation and structure.
Structural Concerns and Repair Funding
Authorities stated that a comprehensive proposal for the complete renovation of the Phaphamau Bridge was sent to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for approval, with an estimated cost of ₹6 crore.
However, in the absence of immediate approval, engineers have recommended temporary strengthening measures to ensure the bridge’s safety.
This will include joint replacement, deck repairs, and support reinforcement, which necessitate the complete closure of the bridge for all vehicular traffic.
Expert’s Statement
“Given the bridge’s deteriorating condition, complete closure is the only viable option. The proposal for full-scale repair has been submitted, but immediate safety measures are being prioritized.
Heavy vehicles, in particular, pose a high risk, and this step is essential for the safety of commuters.”
— Ravindra Pal Singh, Assistant Engineer, National Highways Division, Prayagraj.
No Pedestrian Access During Closure
The administration has clarified that even pedestrian movement will not be permitted on the bridge during the six-month repair period to ensure worker safety and expedite repairs.
Heavy machinery will be deployed for replacement and strengthening work, making it unsafe for public movement.
With the monsoon season adding stress to riverbank structures, officials emphasized the urgency of the closure, urging citizens to plan their travel accordingly and cooperate with traffic diversions.
Key Details:
- Closure Start Date: September 1
- Duration: Six months
- Reason: Major repairs, including joint replacement and deck strengthening.
- Alternative Routes: Shastri Bridge and nearby diversions.
- Repair Proposal Cost: ₹6 crore (awaiting approval).
