Wall of Dilapidated Mosque Collapses at Shahganj Vegetable Market, Two Labourers Critically Injured; Search On for Others
Prayagraj: On Thursday evening, a weakened wall of a mosque adjacent to an under-construction basement at the Shahganj vegetable market suddenly collapsed, triggering panic in the area.
Two labourers were buried under the debris and sustained serious injuries.
The police rushed to the spot and, with the help of residents, rescued the injured workers and admitted them to SRN Hospital, where their condition remains critical.
There were also fears that two more labourers were trapped beneath the rubble.
According to locals, the property belongs to Habib, a ration dealer living in Shahganj vegetable market. His old house, situated next to the Saudagar Mosque, was recently demolished to make way for new construction.
At present, a basement about 15 feet deep is being built on the site.
Eyewitnesses said that around 5:30 pm, the labourers were wrapping up their work and gathering their tools when the mosque’s weakened wall suddenly gave way with a loud crash, causing chaos at the scene.
Shahganj police immediately arrived, and the injured workers — Mukesh and Pappu — were pulled out from under the debris and rushed to the hospital.
Meanwhile, teams from the municipal corporation and the NDRF continued late into the night, using JCB machines to clear the rubble in search of the other two labourers believed to be trapped.
Station House Officer Kapil Singh said that two workers had been sent to the hospital, and the situation regarding the remaining labourers would become clear once the debris was fully removed.
As of the latest update, SHO Shahganj Kapil Chahal said there was confusion over the other two labourers getting trapped under the rubble, as nobody else was found when the debris was cleared.
