Yogi Adityanath Warns Against Divisive Politics, Honours CDS Bipin Rawat at Gorakhpur Sainik School Event

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday called for heightened public awareness against forces that divide society along caste, regional, or linguistic lines.

Comparing such divisive actors to historical figures like Jaichand and Mir Jafar, the Chief Minister said those who attempt to weaken the country from within are guilty of similar betrayals.

Adityanath made the remarks while inaugurating a newly constructed auditorium named after former Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat at the Sainik School in Gorakhpur, where he also unveiled a statue of the late military leader.

General Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, and 11 armed forces personnel died in a helicopter crash in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, on December 8, 2021.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Minister said that a society disconnected from its own heritage cannot progress.

He urged citizens to honour India’s cultural and martial legacy, saying, “We must take pride in the heritage and traditions of Shri Ram, Shri Krishna, Maharana Pratap, Chhatrapati Shivaji, Guru Gobind Singh, and Rani Lakshmi Bai.

A nation moves forward only by valuing its great personalities and brave soldiers.”

Adityanath stressed that foreign invaders and colonial figures should not be placed on a pedestal.

“Why should we call Alexander ‘the Great’? For us, Maharana Pratap, Chhatrapati Shivaji, General Bipin Rawat, and Param Vir Chakra awardees are great,” he said, adding that India must shed the inferiority complex that glorifies foreign goods over Indian-made products.

In a sharp political message, the Chief Minister alleged that several forces were working to divide society and, when in positions of power, focus solely on personal enrichment.

“When such anti-national elements come to power, they think about themselves and their families — buying property, building hotels abroad, even purchasing islands.

These forces work to keep the country poor,” he said. Temporary appeasements offered in the name of caste or region, he added, can never ensure genuine development.

Adityanath also criticised the functioning of trade unions, suggesting that excessive trade-union politics had destroyed established institutions.

Citing the example of the Gorakhpur fertiliser factory, he said, “This factory was operational before 1990, but trade-union interference led to its permanent closure. We fought for 20 years—from 1996 to 2016—and only then could a new fertiliser plant be established.

Today, the factory produces three times more than before.”

Highlighting the progress of the Gorakhpur Sainik School, the Chief Minister said the institution now offers state-of-the-art residential education to both boys and girls.

Since the introduction of a separate reservation for girls in 2018, the school has seen increasing female participation. Currently, 310 cadets — 75 girls and 235 boys — are enrolled.

Lt General Vikas Lakhera, Director General of Assam Rifles and the event’s guest of honour, said General Bipin Rawat’s service and leadership would remain etched in golden letters in the history of the Indian armed forces.
