KOLKATA: A festive evening in Kolkata turned into a major emergency on Saturday when a crush of people at the Chorebagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal reportedly claimed at least 18 lives, with several others sustaining injuries.

The incident prompted authorities to impose restrictions at other popular festival venues to reduce the risk of further crowd-related emergencies.

The immediate response focused on rescuing and treating those affected. Injured people were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, while police moved to control the gathering and stopped public access to the Chorebagan venue.

The circumstances that led to the deadly congestion were not immediately clear.

Political leaders react as injured receive treatment

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said he had spoken to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari about the incident. He expressed sympathy for the bereaved families and offered prayers for the deceased.

Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee also voiced grief over the loss of life and injuries, extending her wishes for the recovery of those receiving treatment.

CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakraborty, meanwhile, raised questions about administrative responsibility. He said the incident was deeply disturbing and argued that the state government and the administration must be answerable for what had happened.

Adhikari visited the hospital to take stock of the situation and review the arrangements for the injured.

High-footfall venues face precautionary restrictions

The crowd-control response extended beyond Chorebagan. Police restricted access to several major Durga Puja attractions, including Suruchi Sangha and Chetla Agrani.

Tala Prattoy also announced that its pandal would remain closed to visitors until further notice.

The decisions came against the backdrop of repeated concerns over congestion at Kolkata’s most popular festival destinations. Deshapriya Park and Sreebhumi, along with a venue in Kalyani, had previously faced crowd-related concerns that prompted precautionary action.

With large numbers of people visiting pandals during the festive period, the latest restrictions were intended to prevent overcrowding from developing into another dangerous situation.
