Shraddha Dubey Held in Nagpur in Shiva Sharma Death Probe After 11-Day Manhunt

UP police trace the influencer, her sister and a driver to a residential flat; conflicting accounts of the Lucknow cafe owner’s fatal fall remain under investigation.

LUCKNOW/NAGPUR: An interstate search for model and social media influencer Shraddha Dubey ended in Nagpur on Tuesday, where police took her into custody along with her sister, Rashmi Dubey, and Tanveer Ali, also known as Danish, who worked as their driver.

All three are accused in connection with the death of Lucknow cafe owner Shiva Sharma and had been sought by investigators for 11 days.

The arrests mark a significant step in a case that has drawn attention because of the conflicting versions surrounding the 27-year-old’s death.

Police are now preparing to bring the three accused to Lucknow on transit remand for further investigation.

Shiva died on October 9 after falling from the fourth floor of Awadh Green Apartment in the Hazratganj neighbourhood. Shraddha occupied a rented flat in the building.

His mother, Ranjana Sharma, subsequently approached the police, alleging foul play.

An FIR accusing Shraddha, her sister and the driver of the murder was registered at Hazratganj police station.

The investigation intensified after the three could not be located. Police obtained non-bailable warrants and announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to the arrest of each accused.

How investigators located the trio

The search reportedly extended beyond Uttar Pradesh. A senior police officer said the suspects travelled to Nepal shortly after Shiva’s death and remained there for around a week.

Investigators claim to have obtained footage indicating that they crossed the international border before eventually returning to India.

Their subsequent movements proved difficult to track, as they allegedly shifted between locations and changed their travel arrangements frequently.

A lead took investigators to Agra several days before Tuesday’s arrests. By the time the police team reached the suspected location, however, the three had reportedly departed for Nagpur in a car.

Investigators then relied on call records and other intelligence to identify a flat on Wardha Road in Nagpur.

The accommodation was said to belong to someone acquainted with the accused. A police team raided the premises on Tuesday afternoon and arrested all three at approximately 3.30 pm.

Nagpur Crime Branch Deputy Commissioner of Police Deepak Agrawal confirmed Shraddha’s arrest.

A local police officer said the group had taken considerable care to avoid being traced. Police also alleged that Shraddha sometimes wore a burqa while travelling to make identification more difficult.

Investigators are expected to examine the trio’s movements during their time away from Lucknow and question them about the events surrounding Shiva’s death. Their transfer to Uttar Pradesh is being arranged, according to police.

Two competing versions of the fatal incident

Even as the police searched for her, Shraddha used social media videos to present her version of the case. She denied wrongdoing and challenged aspects of the investigation.

In a video circulated on Sunday evening, she claimed that Shiva had jumped from the building and that she had witnessed the incident.

She also questioned the handling of CCTV evidence, alleging that investigators had obtained footage relating to her presence near the Nepal border but had not secured recordings from the apartment complex.

Shraddha offered a separate explanation for the relationship between the two. She claimed they had known each other for approximately four months and that Shiva had started visiting her residence around two months before his death.

She further alleged that Shiva owed between Rs 16 lakh and Rs 17 lakh and had asked her for financial assistance.

According to her account, jewellery valued at Rs 5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh had also gone missing from her home after Shiva allegedly took it about a month before his death. She claimed he had acknowledged taking the items and promised to return them.

These assertions have been rejected by Shiva’s family. His mother has questioned the allegation of debt and asked why no police complaint was filed over the purported removal of the jewellery if Shraddha believed a theft had occurred.

Ranjana, who runs a chikankari clothing business in Lucknow’s Aliganj area, said her contact with Shraddha had been limited to two brief meetings.

She denied that her son had told the family he was facing financial difficulties and disputed the suggestion that he was suffering from depression.

The mother has alleged that her son was killed and had been subjected to pressure.

She believes Shraddha’s public statements are intended to deflect attention from the allegations against her. These are the family’s claims; the precise circumstances of Shiva’s death remain a matter for investigators to establish.

Family questions delay in arrest

Shiva’s relatives have also questioned how Shraddha was able to circulate videos and speak to media organisations while police were searching for her.

Ranjana suggested that influential individuals might be assisting the accused, although no independent confirmation of that allegation has been provided.

The family has consistently maintained that the death requires a thorough investigation and has rejected Shraddha’s account of the incident.

The opposing claims are expected to form part of the police inquiry, alongside physical and digital evidence.

Police question father in Rae Bareli

Investigators have also followed leads connected to Shraddha’s family residence in Rae Bareli.

On Sunday, a Lucknow Police team visited the house in the Rajajipuram area and recorded another statement from her father, Shiv Prasad Dubey, a retired government employee.

A neighbour said the officers remained at the property for about an hour before leaving. The neighbour also said Shraddha and her two siblings were from their father’s first marriage.

According to the account, Shiv Prasad and his second wife were at the house, while tenants had vacated their portion and locked it, apparently fearing possible police action.

With the arrests completed, the investigation now enters a crucial phase.

Police will need to assess the accounts given by the accused and the family, reconstruct the movements of those involved, and establish the sequence of events that ended in Shiva’s death.
