Prayagraj SRN Hospital Clash: Doctors Demand Security After Professor and Medical Students Allegedly Attacked
PRAYAGRAJ: Tensions between the legal and medical communities have intensified in Prayagraj following allegations that an assistant professor and eight MBBS students were assaulted during a lawyers’ protest near Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital on Monday.
The incident has prompted police action and protests by doctors, who are demanding stronger security arrangements and a fair investigation.
A case has been registered at George Town police station on the complaint of Dr Vibhu Ranjan Mishra, an assistant professor in the medical college’s Department of Medicine.
Police said evidence, including CCTV recordings and video footage, would be examined to establish what happened and identify those allegedly involved.
According to the complaint, Dr Mishra was returning home by car after the protest when he was allegedly attacked near the SRN Hospital turn at around 12.30 pm.
He claimed that a group of lawyers surrounded him and assaulted him, causing injuries to his head, shoulder and other parts of his body. He was subsequently admitted to hospital for treatment.
The complaint further alleges that his wallet, mobile phone and gold chain were taken during the incident and that his car was damaged.
Eight MBBS students — Anuj Sharma, Tejas Joshi, Utkarsh Sharma, Arya Srivastava, Balaram, Rakesh, Wasim Raza and Abhishek Yadav — were also allegedly beaten during the disturbance.
The latest confrontation followed an earlier incident on the night of October 22, when advocate Sarvesh Shukla and his driver were allegedly assaulted during a dispute over treatment at the hospital’s trauma centre.
Lawyers subsequently staged a road blockade and protest on Monday, arguing that adequate legal action had not followed the registration of a case in that matter.
The agitation continued for nearly seven hours, according to the account provided.
Medical Faculty Marches, Seeks Stronger Security
The alleged assault on Dr Mishra and the students triggered anger among doctors at the medical college.
On Tuesday, members of the Medical Teachers’ Association organised a protest march on the campus under the leadership of its president, Dr Dilip Chaurasia, who heads the Department of Urology.
The association also submitted a memorandum to the college principal, Dr A.K. Verma, outlining its concerns and demands.
These included adequate protection for doctors, restrictions on the entry of unauthorised outsiders into the college, registration of a formal police complaint on behalf of the injured students, an impartial investigation and legal action against anyone found responsible.
Several doctors, including Dr Neelam Singh, Major Dr Jitendra Shukla, Dr Santosh Singh, Dr Shabi Ahmad, Dr Badal Singh, Dr Abhishek Singh, Dr Suryakant Ojha and Dr Kavita Chawla, participated in the protest.
Allahabad Medical Association Appeals to Bar Council
The Allahabad Medical Association (AMA) also took up the matter at a meeting held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of its president, Dr Jyoti Bhushan.
Association representatives urged the Bar Council to take stringent action against those identified as responsible for the alleged attack on medical personnel.
The AMA stressed that doctors working at SRN Hospital must be able to perform their duties without fear of violence.
The association reiterated that the reported assault had left Dr Vibhu Ranjan Mishra and medical students injured and called for accountability.
AMA secretary Dr Subhash Chandra Verma and public relations officer Dr Sunil Singh attended the meeting.
With complaints from both sides and protests by members of the medical fraternity, the police investigation is expected to play a key role in establishing the sequence of events and determining individual responsibility.
Authorities have said CCTV footage, videos, and other available evidence will be examined before further legal action is taken.
