Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar Honoured by UAE After Foiling Mid-Air Attack on Dubai–Tel Aviv Flight
DUBAI: Indian pilot Smit Machchhar has received a prestigious United Arab Emirates honour for his role in protecting passengers during a reported attack inside the cockpit of a Dubai–Tel Aviv flight in September.
The UAE President, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, awarded Machchhar and other flydubai crew members the First Class Order of Zayed II in recognition of their courage and professional conduct.
The decorations were presented by Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum during a presidential reception, according to the Dubai Media Office.
Sheikh Hamdan praised the crew for their composure, commitment to passenger safety and sense of responsibility during the incident.
The ceremony was attended by senior Emirati officials, including Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs, and Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, who heads Dubai’s civil aviation authority and holds senior positions at Dubai Airports and Emirates Airline and Group.
The First Class Order of Zayed II is a high-level UAE civil decoration bestowed in recognition of distinguished service, bravery and contributions to the country’s international relationships.
Cockpit confrontation forced flight to divert
The incident occurred on September 30, 2026, aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, which had departed Dubai for Tel Aviv with 174 people on board, most of them Israeli passengers.
According to the account provided, the Boeing 737 MAX experienced a sudden drop in altitude after an alleged attack by Omani co-pilot Hamam al-Hammami on Machchhar while the aircraft was in flight.
The situation prompted an emergency response inside the aircraft. Passengers and other crew members reportedly intervened to regain control of the cockpit, after which the aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it landed.
The Omani co-pilot was taken into custody following the incident. Machchhar received initial medical treatment at a hospital in Tabuk before being transferred to Abu Dhabi for further care.
Recognition for crew’s response
The award recognises the crew’s reported efforts to protect those on board during a dangerous in-flight emergency. The UAE leadership highlighted the importance of professionalism and responsible decision-making when passenger safety is at risk.
The honour for Machchhar also brings attention to the responsibilities carried by flight crews during emergencies, particularly when an incident threatens both cockpit security and the safe operation of an aircraft.
