Jamia Millia Islamia Reports Major Campus Damage Amid Student Protest Over Gate Closure

University alleges destruction of Gate 4C, CCTV equipment and boundary walls during overnight unrest, while protesting students object to restricted campus access; Delhi Police says it has not received a complaint.

NEW DELHI: A dispute over restrictions on campus entry at Jamia Millia Islamia escalated into a serious confrontation, with the university alleging extensive damage to its infrastructure during protests that continued into Tuesday night.

The administration claimed that protesters broke a campus gate, damaged boundary walls and security equipment, and pelted stones during the unrest.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the university expressed concern about the safety of students, teaching staff and other employees.

It alleged that groups of students and residents were involved in the damage and that some masked individuals visited the boys’ hostels in an attempt to draw more people into the agitation.

The immediate trigger for the protest was the administration’s decision to restrict access to the campus, particularly through Gate 4C.

The entrance is used by residents of Zakir Hussain Hall and Jauhar Hall, which together accommodate students in eight hostels.

A student involved in the protest, speaking on condition of anonymity, said hostel residents were angered by the closure because the gate served as a convenient route to the university.

The student claimed that protesters broke open the entrance to regain access and said demonstrators would decide their next steps on Wednesday.

University alleges deliberate damage to security infrastructure

According to the administration, members of the proctorial team and university teachers rushed to the campus after reports of vandalism emerged.

The university said videos, CCTV recordings and social media material appeared to show the use of iron rods, hammers and other tools to damage public-facing infrastructure and security installations.

The administration also alleged that women faculty members, hostel wardens and provosts faced threats when they tried to persuade female protesters to maintain order.

It said the damage occurred soon after another effort to negotiate with the protesters had failed to resolve the standoff.

The university claimed that it had made seven attempts to engage with the students through discussions involving teachers and committee representatives.

One such round of talks reportedly took place on Tuesday evening. The administration expressed disappointment that discussions had been followed by further damage to university property.

It further said that the latest incidents were part of a week-long pattern in which campus gates and sections of boundary walls had allegedly been climbed, damaged or breached.

Jamia had already shifted teaching activities to online mode under a notification issued on October 24.

The administration warned that damage to classrooms, laboratories, libraries, entry and exit points, and surveillance systems could disrupt academic activities, increase repair costs and create security risks.

Hunger-striking student leader raises allegations

The university’s account was challenged by Ebin Basil, a National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) leader who is participating in an indefinite hunger strike against the administration.

In a video message, Basil alleged that the university had tightened restrictions around the protest site and was preventing food, water and medical assistance from reaching demonstrators.

He also claimed that a doctor who had come to examine him was not permitted to check his blood pressure.

Basil described the restrictions as a threat to the health of those on hunger strike and appealed to students to continue the agitation.

At the same time, he urged protesters to avoid violence and defacement, warning that such acts could undermine the movement and give the administration grounds to discredit it.

The dispute has therefore developed along two sharply different accounts: the university says the unrest has endangered campus safety and damaged public property, while protesters have raised concerns about access restrictions and the treatment of those participating in the hunger strike.

Delhi Police says no complaint received so far

The university said the alleged destruction had left faculty members and non-teaching employees distressed, adding that the safety of the entire campus community was at risk.

Delhi Police, however, said it had not received a formal complaint from the university as of Wednesday and had not entered the campus in connection with the incident.

The situation remains tense as the dispute over access to the university continues. Any further police action will depend on the information and complaints formally placed before the authorities.
