Cyclone Arnab Kills Six in Andhra Pradesh, Flooding Triggers Rescue Efforts in Odisha

More than 1.8 lakh people were evacuated ahead of the storm; heavy rain, damaged power infrastructure, and transport disruptions hit several districts across eastern India.

Cyclone Arnab Leaves Trail of Destruction Across Eastern India, Rescue Operations Intensify

VISAKHAPATNAM/BHUBANESWAR: Cyclone Arnab has left a trail of destruction across parts of eastern India, claiming lives in Andhra Pradesh, disrupting electricity supplies and inundating low-lying areas as authorities continue relief and restoration work.

Heavy rain and damage to transport infrastructure have also affected normal life in several districts.

The cyclone crossed the Andhra Pradesh–Yanam coast early on October 28, bringing powerful winds and torrential rain before gradually losing strength over land.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the system weakened after landfall and subsequently moved towards southern Odisha and adjoining regions.

The official death toll in Andhra Pradesh stood at six in one report on Thursday, although other local reports cited higher figures.

The deaths were attributed to cyclone-related incidents, including electrocution and falling trees. An 11-year-old boy also died after a wall collapsed in Tenali mandal, according to the state disaster management authority.

Heavy rain inundates villages, Andhra Pradesh seeks central assistance

Several districts in Andhra Pradesh experienced intense rainfall, with low-lying locations recording precipitation of around 200 mm. Eluru, West Godavari and Vizianagaram were among the districts affected by the storm and associated flooding.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has approached Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking a central assessment of the damage to crops, houses, roads and other infrastructure.

The state government is working to restore essential services and assess the losses suffered by residents and farmers.

More than 1.8 lakh people were evacuated from vulnerable areas in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha before the cyclone arrived. The precautionary relocations were aimed at reducing casualties in coastal settlements and flood-prone locations.

Power and road restoration gather pace

The storm damaged electricity infrastructure and blocked roads with fallen trees and debris.

State disaster management officials said restoration teams had reopened around 90 per cent of affected roads and repaired most of the reported power-line disruptions, with work continuing on Thursday.

Officials said people staying in cyclone shelters would be allowed to return once authorities had inspected their villages and ensured that the areas were safe.

The phased return is intended to prevent residents from entering locations where fallen power lines, damaged buildings or other hazards may remain.

Odisha prepares to rescue flood-stranded residents

In neighbouring Odisha, authorities have been coordinating with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs over the possible deployment of a Coast Guard helicopter to evacuate more than 2,000 people reportedly stranded by flooding in Ganjam and Gajapati districts.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said preparations and timely evacuations had helped the state meet its objective of preventing cyclone-related deaths.

Rescue teams and local officials remained engaged in assessing conditions in affected areas.

The weather disruption has also prompted calls for changes to public examinations.

Koraput MP Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka urged the Odisha Public Service Commission to reschedule the Odisha Civil Services Main examination at its Jeypore centre because of the impact of the cyclone.

Flights disrupted, weather alerts extend beyond the coast

The Civil Aviation Ministry said operations at three airports in Andhra Pradesh had been suspended amid the adverse weather.

In contrast, flight services at Bhubaneswar were largely operating normally, although a nine-seat service connecting Bhubaneswar, Jeypore and Visakhapatnam was cancelled.

The effects of the weather system extended beyond Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

The IMD forecast heavy rainfall in parts of West Bengal through October 31, while schools remained closed in several districts of Chhattisgarh, including Sukma, Narayanpur, Bijapur, Dantewada and Rajnandgaon.

Authorities continued to monitor rainfall and local conditions as the weakened system moved inland, with the possibility of further disruption in vulnerable areas.

Focus shifts to rehabilitation and damage assessment

With the cyclone weakening, attention has increasingly turned to restoring electricity, clearing roads, assessing crop losses and helping displaced families return home safely.

The scale of damage to homes, agricultural land and public infrastructure will determine the recovery effort required in the affected districts.

State and central authorities are expected to assess the losses and identify areas requiring additional assistance.

The immediate priority remains the safety of people in flood-affected settlements, followed by the restoration of essential services and support for communities whose homes and livelihoods have been damaged by Cyclone Arnab.
