Iran Raises Military Stakes as Khamenei Warns of Retaliation; Trump Keeps Attack Option Open
The prospect of a negotiated end to the Iran conflict remains uncertain, with Washington and Tehran appearing far apart on the conditions for a settlement.
The dispute over the Strait of Hormuz, American military deployments in the region and economic sanctions continue to complicate diplomatic efforts, even as both governments leave open the possibility of further military confrontation.
Against this backdrop, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has directed the country’s military leadership to prepare for a forceful response if the United States or Israel resumes attacks.
A statement released through his official website on Saturday indicated that Tehran would not allow its adversaries to dictate the course or duration of any future confrontation.
Khamenei’s message went beyond a general warning. He reportedly instructed military commanders to reassess the range of potential targets, extending it to physical infrastructure as well as other assets linked to the United States and Israel.
He also called for an immediate and powerful response to threats, without geographical restrictions.
The statement followed a meeting with senior military commanders, reportedly the first publicly reported interaction of its kind since Khamenei assumed the position of supreme leader.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, meanwhile, has indicated that Tehran is prepared to consider renewed engagement with Washington, but only if its demands receive serious consideration.
He told Al Jazeera that Iran had examined a communication from US Vice President JD Vance and discussed it during high-level consultations.
Among Tehran’s demands are the removal of sanctions imposed following the Islamabad memorandum of understanding and a reduction in American military forces stationed across the region.
Araqchi also linked the possibility of restarting negotiations to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz under arrangements acceptable to Iran.
The waterway, through which a substantial share of international oil shipments normally passes, has become a major source of friction. Iran has rejected claims that it offered to restore shipping access in return for the lifting of the American naval blockade.
Trump, however, has maintained that Tehran is interested in an agreement to reopen the passage, while expressing doubts about whether Iran would honour its commitments.
The American president has offered little clarity about the next steps. Speaking to KCMO Talk Radio in Kansas City on Friday, Donald Trump predicted that the war would conclude in the near future.
He nevertheless made clear that Washington’s central concern remained preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, which he said any settlement must guarantee.
Trump has also avoided ruling out another round of attacks. On October 24, he indicated that military action could take place as early as Sunday, although he simultaneously suggested that a diplomatic agreement was possible.
Later, after voting in Florida, he declined to disclose whether fresh strikes were being considered, leaving both possibilities on the table.
The uncertainty reflects the fragile state of relations since February 28, when American and Israeli forces launched coordinated attacks on Iran.
The conflict has had consequences well beyond the battlefield, heightening security concerns across the Middle East and disrupting maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz.
The disruption has also raised alarm over the stability of international energy supplies.
For now, Tehran is combining demands for political and economic concessions with preparations for possible escalation, while Washington continues to alternate between talk of an imminent end to the war and warnings of further military action.
Neither side has yet provided a clear indication that a lasting settlement is within reach.
