Rahul Gandhi Warns Modi Government of Legal Consequences, Says INDIA Bloc Will Fight to Protect Democracy

At Ramlila Maidan rally, Congress leader targets CEC Gyanesh Kumar over alleged voter list manipulation, accuses BJP and RSS of controlling institutions and favouring big industrialists.

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday issued a strong warning to the BJP-led government, declaring that the INDIA bloc would continue its political and legal battle over alleged electoral irregularities and would not allow democratic institutions to be weakened.

Addressing a large gathering at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, he predicted that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar would eventually be removed and said legal proceedings would follow against those he accused of being responsible for manipulating the electoral process.

Gandhi described the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner as an essential step towards restoring public confidence in the democratic system.

Referring to Home Minister Amit Shah’s assertion that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would remain in office, the Congress leader responded that those facing legal accountability would not be able to escape the consequences.

He indicated that the Opposition’s campaign would extend beyond the Election Commission to other senior members of the government.

Seeking to give the gathering a broader political significance, Gandhi said the people assembled at the venue represented concerns extending beyond individual political parties.

He portrayed the mobilisation as an expression of frustration among young Indians, farmers and ordinary citizens.

Rahul Gandhi alleges large-scale deletion of voter names

A substantial part of Gandhi’s address focused on the electoral rolls. He alleged that approximately 13.5 crore names had disappeared from voter lists following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

According to his calculation, this represented nearly 15 per cent, or roughly one in seven voters.

He contrasted the alleged deletions with the NDA’s victory margin of approximately three per cent in the general election, arguing that the scale of the changes raised serious questions about the legitimacy of the electoral outcome.

Gandhi characterised the exercise as an election compromised by manipulation and maintained that the figures he cited originated from the Election Commission’s own records.

Describing the alleged manipulation as an attack on the fundamental rights of citizens, he argued that the issue was much more serious than ordinary electoral malpractice.

In his view, removing legitimate voters from the rolls amounted to silencing their political voice and undermining the democratic principle that every citizen should have an equal opportunity to participate in elections.

The Congress leader also predicted that Gyanesh Kumar would face imprisonment, reiterating that those responsible for any wrongdoing should be held accountable under the law.

He further alleged that the present political leadership owed its electoral success to the functioning of the Election Commission under Kumar.

RSS accused of exercising influence over constitutional institutions

Gandhi subsequently turned his criticism towards the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, alleging that the organisation and the BJP had established influence over institutions that should function independently and serve the entire population.

He argued that public institutions were not the property of any political organisation and should not be used to advance the interests of a particular ideological group.

Economic inequality also featured prominently in his speech. Gandhi accused the government of allowing a small group of wealthy industrialists to accumulate disproportionate economic advantages.

Naming Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani, he alleged that large business houses received favourable treatment, including relief on loans, while ordinary citizens and farming families faced severe consequences when they struggled to repay their debts.

He said the country’s economic opportunities should not be concentrated in the hands of a few influential business groups. A farmer’s family, he argued, should receive the same opportunity to prosper as those with access to political and financial power.

Calls for an India where opportunity is not restricted

Using the imagery of Lord Shiva’s wedding procession, popularly known as Shiv ki Barat, Gandhi presented his vision of an inclusive country in which people from different backgrounds could live and progress together.

He argued that hard work should determine an individual’s opportunities rather than wealth, social standing or political connections.

A farmer who works tirelessly should be able to fulfil personal ambitions, while a student who devotes long hours to education should have a fair chance of achieving success.

Gandhi also sought to distinguish his political opposition from personal hostility towards individuals.

He said he did not harbour hatred towards Modi, Shah or the Chief Election Commissioner. He maintained that his political struggle was not intended to encourage violence against BJP or RSS workers.

Concluding his message, the Congress leader placed the concerns and aspirations of ordinary citizens above religious divisions.

He described listening to the people as the guiding principle of his political beliefs and accused the BJP and RSS of promoting an atmosphere of hostility that, in his assessment, had damaged India’s social fabric.

His address at Ramlila Maidan thus combined allegations of electoral wrongdoing with criticism of institutional functioning, economic inequality and the politics of religious polarisation.

The speech also signalled that the INDIA bloc intends to maintain pressure on the government over the Election Commission controversy.
