Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor Dulal Sarkar, commonly known as Babla, was tragically shot dead on Thursday morning in West Bengal’s Malda district. According to police reports, Sarkar was targeted by bike-borne assailants at Jhaljhalia More, who fired multiple shots at his head from close range.

He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries, a senior police officer confirmed. “A probe has been initiated, and efforts are underway to identify the perpetrators,” the officer told PTI.

The incident has sent shockwaves across the region, with TMC supporters and residents mourning the loss of the popular leader. Sarkar, a dedicated member of the TMC, had been a councillor from Malda and was deeply involved in grassroots political work.

Expressing her grief, West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee took to social media to pay tribute to Sarkar. She shared her sorrow on X (formerly Twitter), describing Babla as a close associate and a hardworking party member.

“My close associate and a very popular leader, Babla Sarkar, was murdered today. From the inception of the Trinamool Congress, both Babla and his wife, Chaitali Sarkar, worked tirelessly for the party. Babla was also elected as a councillor,” Banerjee wrote in her post.

She further added, “I am so shocked and saddened that I am at a loss for words to convey my condolences to the bereaved family. May God give Chaitali the strength to endure this tragedy and continue the fight.”

The killing has raised concerns about safety and political violence in the region, with the police under pressure to bring the culprits to justice swiftly. Meanwhile, the TMC leadership has vowed to support the grieving family and uphold the legacy of their dedicated leader.

As investigations continue, the incident has left a void in the local community, where Sarkar was not just a political figure but also a beloved representative of the people.
