WASHINGTON: A financial controversy surrounding Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding celebrations has taken a new turn after President Donald Trump said his son intends to return money provided by Russian businessman Umar Kremlev.

The issue centres on two parties held in the Bahamas after Trump Jr. married Bettina Anderson in May. Kremlev, a wealthy Russian businessman who heads the International Boxing Association, was involved in hosting the celebrations, which included lavish entertainment and accommodation arrangements.

President Trump said Friday that he had discussed the matter with his son and understood that reimbursement was being made.

A person familiar with the arrangement has separately indicated that Trump Jr. does intend to repay Kremlev.

The financial arrangement has attracted attention in Washington because of Kremlev’s Russian background and questions over his connections with people close to the Trump family.

Congressional Democrats have now begun examining the circumstances surrounding the funding.

The controversy does not concern the wedding ceremony itself.

Bettina Trump has said Kremlev’s contribution covered two celebrations following the marriage, describing his role as an exceptionally generous gesture from a friend.

The reported spending was substantial. Among the expenses attributed to Kremlev were the use of a private island for wedding guests and a large fireworks display.

The details emerged from financial records and conversations with individuals familiar with the arrangements.

Rather than dispute Kremlev’s involvement, Bettina Trump publicly acknowledged it.

She portrayed the Russian businessman as a friend and said the celebrations he hosted were effectively a wedding gift.

That explanation has not ended scrutiny of the arrangement. Lawmakers are examining the broader relationship between Kremlev and the Trump family, including the circumstances in which the businessman became involved in the private celebrations.

Trump, meanwhile, has said he does not personally know Kremlev.

He has also played down the significance of the controversy and has compared the situation with his own history of hosting wedding-related events.

The president said he has frequently hosted wedding parties at his Florida property, Mar-a-Lago, for people celebrating their marriages.

He used that experience to explain why he did not regard the hosting of wedding festivities by a friend as unusual.

Trump himself was not present when his son married in the Bahamas.

The latest development means the immediate financial issue could be resolved through reimbursement, but questions surrounding Kremlev’s relationship with the Trump family remain under examination.

The businessman’s role is particularly sensitive because of his position in international boxing and his reported connections in Russia.

Kremlev and the International Boxing Association had not issued a response to requests for comment by Friday.

For Trump Jr., repayment would remove one element of the controversy—the question of who ultimately bears the cost of the celebrations.

It does not, however, settle the separate questions being examined by congressional Democrats about the nature and circumstances of Kremlev’s involvement.

The episode has therefore shifted from a dispute over wedding hospitality to a broader inquiry into foreign financial connections, even as the Trump family maintains that the celebrations were a private matter involving a friend.

अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति डोनाल्ड ट्रंप ने कहा है कि उनके बेटे ने रूसी कारोबारी उमर क्रेमलेव से मिली आर्थिक मदद की रकम वापस करने का फैसला किया है।

मामला मई में डोनाल्ड ट्रंप जूनियर और बेटिना एंडरसन की शादी के बाद आयोजित दो निजी समारोहों से जुड़ा है।

इन आयोजनों की मेजबानी में क्रेमलेव की भूमिका सामने आने के बाद अब इस बात को लेकर सवाल उठ रहे हैं कि इनका खर्च किस तरह वहन किया गया।

क्रेमलेव रूस के एक कारोबारी हैं और इंटरनेशनल बॉक्सिंग एसोसिएशन के प्रमुख हैं।

राष्ट्रपति ट्रंप ने शुक्रवार को कहा कि उन्होंने इस मामले में अपने बेटे से बात की है और उन्हें बताया गया है कि क्रेमलेव को रकम वापस की जा रही है।

मामले से परिचित एक व्यक्ति ने भी डोनाल्ड ट्रंप जूनियर द्वारा भुगतान लौटाने की योजना की पुष्टि की है।

जांच की दिलचस्पी केवल शादी के खर्च तक सीमित नहीं है। क्रेमलेव की कारोबारी पृष्ठभूमि, रूस में उनके संपर्क और ट्रंप परिवार से उनके संबंध भी जांच के दायरे में बताए जा रहे हैं।

राष्ट्रपति ट्रंप ने क्रेमलेव से व्यक्तिगत परिचय होने से इनकार किया है।

उन्होंने इस विवाद को ज्यादा महत्व का विषय नहीं बताया और अपने अनुभव का हवाला देते हुए कहा कि वह भी वर्षों से लोगों के विवाह के अवसर पर समारोह आयोजित करते रहे हैं।

ट्रंप ने अपने फ्लोरिडा स्थित मार-ए-लागो क्लब का उदाहरण देते हुए कहा कि विवाह के अवसर पर पार्टियों की मेजबानी करना उनके लिए कोई असामान्य बात नहीं रही है।
