Advocate Shot Over Property Dispute at Azad Market, Prayagraj; Accused Nephew Arrested With Licensed Revolver
Chaos erupted at Azad Market in Teliarganj, Prayagraj, on Thursday evening after gunfire broke out during a confrontation between two relatives over an old family dispute.
Advocate Vijay Pandey was seriously injured after being shot three times, allegedly by his nephew, Advocate Omshiv Pandey, in what police believe to be a continuation of a long-standing feud related to ancestral property.
The injured advocate was rushed to SRN Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
The sudden bursts of gunfire caused panic and a stampede-like situation in the busy market area.
Police personnel from Shivkuti Police Station immediately responded to the incident and arrested the accused on the spot with a licensed revolver in his possession. Senior police officials also reached the location soon after.
According to the police, both men—residents of Jondhwal (Vijay Pandey) and Rasoolabad (Omshiv Pandey)—have been involved in an ongoing legal dispute for years.
In 2013, Omshiv’s brother, Shivam Pandey, was murdered, and Vijay Pande, along with others, was named as an accused in the case.
During the investigation, police filed an FR (Final Report), but in 2014, Omshiv challenged the report in court. The matter is still pending judicial review.
Eyewitnesses reported that around 6:30 PM, the two came face-to-face at a sweets shop in Azad Market.
A heated argument broke out over the old rivalry. Police said that Vijay Pandey allegedly picked up an iron rod during the altercation, which led Omshiv to fire three rapid shots from his licensed revolver.
The bullets struck Vijay in his left shoulder, thigh and right arm.
Police have detained the accused and begun further investigation.
