Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have initiated an inquiry into the tragic death of a 34-year-old engineer, Mohit Yadav, a native of the Auraiya district, after a heart-wrenching video surfaced on social media platforms in which he directly accuses his wife and her family of harassment, claiming their actions drove him to take his own life.

Mohit Yadav, who was employed by a Pune-based private company, was found dead under distressing circumstances on Friday evening inside a hotel room located in the neighbouring Etawah district.

His body was discovered hanging, and the police were alerted to the incident shortly after.

The case has since gained widespread attention after a video, believed to have been recorded by Mohit himself just prior to his death, began circulating online.

In the clip, the engineer can be heard laying the blame for his decision squarely on his wife and her relatives, whom he accuses of persistently subjecting him to severe mental harassment and threats. The police have officially confirmed the authenticity of the video.

According to law enforcement officials, the discovery of the body was reported late Friday, and the police arrived at the hotel shortly thereafter to recover the deceased.

The hotel staff reportedly found the room locked from the inside and, upon receiving no response to repeated knocks, contacted the authorities.

In the video message that has since gone viral, Mohit claimed that his wife had frequently threatened him, stating she would falsely implicate him and his family in a dowry harassment case unless he agreed to transfer ownership of his house and other property assets into her name.

He further elaborated that the couple had known each other for several years prior to their marriage.

Their relationship, which began about seven years ago, had been built on mutual affection, and their marriage was solemnized without any formal dowry demands — a fact he clearly reiterated in the video, seemingly as a defense against any future allegations.

Mohit also alleged that following their marriage, the behaviour of his wife and her family changed dramatically. He specifically accused his father-in-law of lodging false criminal complaints against him.

Additionally, he stated that his brother-in-law had even issued direct threats to his life, contributing significantly to his state of fear and mental distress.

In what many are calling a heartbreaking plea, Mohit expressed his frustration over what he perceived as a lack of legal protection for men in situations of domestic harassment.

He lamented the absence of gender-neutral laws, suggesting that had such protections existed, he might not have been forced into taking such an irreversible and devastating step.

“I wish there were laws to protect men too,” he is heard saying in the video. “Only then I wouldn’t have taken this drastic step. I could no longer bear the mental harassment by my wife and her family.”

Following the discovery of his body, the police conducted a post-mortem examination, which confirmed that the cause of death was indeed hanging.

Circle Officer Ram Gopal Sharma, who is overseeing the case, stated that Mohit’s family has yet to lodge a formal complaint, although the investigation into the circumstances of his death is currently ongoing.

After the post-mortem was completed, the deceased’s remains were handed over to his family on Saturday. His funeral was conducted later the same day in Auraiya, where family members, friends, and local residents gathered to pay their final respects.

Mohit’s brother, Taran Pratap, confirmed that the video making rounds on social media was indeed recorded by Mohit in the very same hotel room where his lifeless body was discovered.

He said that before taking the fatal step, Mohit sent the video to him directly and also uploaded it as his WhatsApp status, possibly in the hope that his voice would be heard even after his death.

Taran further revealed that Mohit had left home on Thursday, telling the family that he was heading to Kota, Rajasthan. However, the family was left shattered the following day upon receiving the devastating news of his death in Etawah.

Attempts to contact Mohit’s wife, Priya Yadav, for her side of the story were unsuccessful, as she has remained unreachable since the incident came to light.

The tragic case has sparked discussions both online and offline about the mental health pressures faced by men in abusive relationships, and about the potential need for reform in existing laws to ensure that all victims of domestic harassment, regardless of gender, are provided appropriate legal protections and support.

As the police continue to gather evidence and await any formal complaint from the bereaved family, the case remains under active investigation.
