Behind some of Bollywood’s most iconic dance moves are choreographers who pour their heart and soul into bringing songs to life. One of the industry’s most legendary choreographers will always be remembered as Saroj Khan, the legend.
She worked with ruling actresses of the time, such as Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Raveena Tandon, and trained them for songs which are nothing short of a cult.
In her career spanning over four decades, Saroj Khan worked with multiple Bollywood A-listers. But her pairing with Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit continues to remain iconic to date.
She was the brainchild behind the hooksteps of the Dhak Dhak song from Beta, which continues to trend even today.
Not many know that the song we know today would have been very different if it weren’t for Saroj Khan, who salvaged the situation by logically explaining the dance steps and preventing the censor board from suggesting major edits.
Saroj Khan was renowned in Bollywood for her pioneering spirit as a female choreographer, her ability to create iconic and memorable dance sequences, and her extensive body of work, including over 2000 songs choreographed.
She was also celebrated for her collaborations with Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi, which helped define the era of Bollywood dance.
Saroj Khan was one of the first female choreographers in Bollywood, a field that was dominated by men. She broke the glass ceiling and paved the way for other women to enter the industry.
She was known for her unique and impactful choreography style, which helped to create some of Bollywood’s most memorable dance scenes. Her work often blended traditional Indian dance forms with modern and contemporary elements.
Her collaborations with Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit were particularly successful, leading to iconic songs and dance moves that are still remembered today.
Saroj Khan choreographed over 2000 songs throughout her career, showcasing her versatility and dedication to the art of dance.
She was awarded three National Film Awards and eight Filmfare Awards for Best Choreography, demonstrating her skill and impact on the industry.
Stars like Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi fondly called her “Masterji,” recognizing her influence and respect within the industry.
Saroj Khan’s choreography wasn’t just about steps; she used dance to tell stories and bring songs to life.
I feel lucky, I got an opportunity to work with Saroj Khan ji in one of my films, Ishq Samandar.
Saroj Khan ji acted in that film, and we shared the screen space. I played the lead role in that film.
I will cherish those precious moments for life lifetime.
