Pahalgam Terror Attack: At Least 28 Tourists Killed, Several Injured in Gruesome Shooting
In a horrific act of violence, at least 28 tourists lost their lives and several others were injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire in the scenic Baisaran valley of Pahalgam, located in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
The attack, which took place around 3 PM on Tuesday, unfolded as the assailants descended from the surrounding mountains and targeted a group of tourists enjoying the picturesque meadows of Baisaran—often referred to as “mini Switzerland” for its lush, green landscapes.
Following the sudden eruption of gunfire, security forces swiftly arrived on the scene and launched a combing operation. Initial investigations suggest it may have been a planned terror attack on a popular tourist destination.
Emergency response teams were deployed immediately. Helicopters were pressed into service to evacuate the injured, while locals helped transport victims on ponies down from the high-altitude meadow.
Nation Reacts with Outrage and Condolences
Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “dastardly act” and affirming that the perpetrators will be brought to justice. He emphasized that India’s commitment to combat terrorism remains “unshakable.” In response to the tragedy, Modi also shortened his official visit to Saudi Arabia and skipped the state dinner.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed similar sentiments, condemning the attack and vowing the harshest punishment for those responsible. He immediately departed for Srinagar to assess the situation firsthand.
Global Support Pours In
World leaders expressed their solidarity with India. U.S. President Donald Trump took to social media, calling the attack “deeply disturbing” and pledging America’s full support. He extended prayers for the victims and their families, stating, “Our hearts are with the people of India.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin also conveyed his condolences in a letter to President Droupadi Murmu. Denouncing the violence, Putin stated, “This brutal crime has no justification.” He expressed hope that the masterminds and attackers would be duly punished.
Local and Political Leaders Condemn the Violence
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, along with other top officials, including Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, were present in Srinagar for a high-level security briefing led by Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat.
Former Chief Minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti announced a complete “Kashmir Bandh” in protest of the attack, urging unity against such violence. Meanwhile, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi expressed her deep sorrow over the loss of lives, calling the incident a “cowardly act” that the entire nation must stand against.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, head of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, also condemned the attack, stressing that such acts of violence are condemned in Islam.
Tourist Season in Jeopardy
The attack comes at a time when Kashmir has been witnessing a significant rise in tourism after years of unrest. The incident has cast a shadow over the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to begin on July 3, raising fresh security concerns.
