Prayagraj: In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through the academic community, a 20-year-old first-year BTech student at Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), Allahabad, was found dead in his hostel room on Thursday.

The young student, identified as Nikesh Kumar Rohidas, allegedly died by suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in his room located in the Vivekanand Hostel within the institute’s campus.

According to the police, no suicide note was found at the scene, and the exact reason behind the alleged suicide remains unknown at this point.

Student Was Due to Appear for the Final Semester Exam

Nikesh was pursuing a Bachelor of Technology degree in Computer Science and Engineering and had been residing in Room No. 101 of the hostel.

He hailed from the Champa district in Chhattisgarh. The unfortunate incident came to light just hours before he was scheduled to appear for the final examination of his second semester on Thursday morning.

Reportedly, his roommates had urged him to join them for the exam, to which Nikesh responded that he would follow shortly. However, he failed to arrive at the examination hall.

Upon returning to the hostel after the exam, his roommates and fellow students noticed that his room remained locked from the inside. Growing increasingly concerned, they knocked several times but received no response.

Police Called After Suspicious Circumstances Observed

The students quickly informed the college authorities, who, in turn, contacted the local police. Officers arrived at the scene and, after assessing the situation, broke open the door. Inside, they discovered Nikesh’s body hanging from the ceiling fan. The police immediately took charge of the situation, sealing off the room and initiating an investigation.

As part of the preliminary inquiry, law enforcement officials have seized the student’s mobile phone and laptop to examine any digital evidence that could shed light on his mental state or the reasons that may have led to the tragic decision.

Belongings Were Packed for Return Home

Sources close to the investigation revealed that Nikesh had already packed his belongings, indicating that he was preparing to return to his hometown in Chhattisgarh after the conclusion of his examinations.

This detail has deepened the mystery surrounding the circumstances of his death, as there appeared to be no outward signs of distress or any indications shared with peers or faculty before the incident.

Family Informed, Postmortem Ordered

The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (City), Abhijit Kumar, confirmed the incident and stated that a detailed investigation is underway.

The student’s body has been sent to the mortuary for postmortem, the results of which may help determine any further leads in the case. Authorities have also confirmed that the student’s family has been informed, and they are expected to arrive in Prayagraj shortly.

The incident has cast a somber mood over the MNNIT campus, with students, faculty members, and staff grappling with the loss.
