US Announces Major Tariff Relief for India After Trump–Modi Phone Call, Hints at Building ‘India Gate’ in America

 

New Delhi: In a significant development offering major relief to India, the United States on Monday announced a reduction in tariffs on Indian goods.

Following a phone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Donald Trump said that American tariffs on Indian products would now be lowered from 25 percent to 18 percent.

At the time of filing this report, the Indian government had not issued any official response to the announcement.

The information was shared by the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, through a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The diplomatic exchange comes at a crucial moment, as India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is currently in Washington on a three-day official visit.

However, no details have yet been disclosed regarding the specific points discussed between the two leaders during their conversation.

Adding a symbolic gesture to the diplomatic outreach, President Trump shared an image of India Gate in New Delhi on social media, describing it as a “beautiful victory arch of India.”

He also expressed his intention to build a similar India Gate monument in the United States.

Along with the image, Trump posted the cover page of a magazine featuring photographs of himself and Prime Minister Modi, highlighting the growing ties between the two nations.
