Gwalior Temple Tragedy: Suspected Brake Failure, GPS Route Under Probe After Truck Kills 15 Devotees

GWALIOR: Suspected brake failure on a downhill stretch and questions over the route taken by a heavy vehicle have emerged as key aspects of the investigation into the fatal truck crash outside Sheetla Mata Temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district.

The accident claimed 15 lives and left more than 32 people injured, according to initial reports.

The crash occurred at around 1:30 am on Saturday, when devotees had gathered along Chinaur Road to offer prayers during Navratri.

A truck approaching from the Chinaur side reportedly lost control, ploughed into people waiting in the queue, struck roadside shops and finally hit the temple entrance.

Brake Failure and GPS Route Under Investigation

Police suspect that the truck may have developed a braking problem while descending a steep stretch of road.

The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, leaving little time for devotees gathered along the roadside to escape.

A mechanical examination is needed to determine whether a technical failure was responsible for the accident.

Investigators are also examining whether the truck reached the temple area after its drivers followed a route suggested by a navigation application.

Reports indicate that the vehicles may have taken an unfamiliar road while travelling towards Punjab.

The possibility that GPS guidance led them onto a restricted stretch is being investigated and has not been conclusively established as the cause of the crash.

How Did a Heavy Vehicle Enter the Restricted Zone?

The presence of a truck on a road where heavy vehicles were reportedly prohibited during the festival has raised serious concerns about traffic management.

With large numbers of worshippers visiting the temple for Navratri, restrictions on vehicle movement were intended to protect pedestrians and prevent congestion.

The Madhya Pradesh government responded by ordering the removal of the area’s City Superintendent of Police and suspending eight police personnel.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several other leaders expressed grief over the loss of life.
