Amit Shah Sets 2029 Deadline for Drug-Free India, Praises Police Role in National Security

At the National Police Memorial on Police Commemoration Day, the Home Minister honours fallen personnel, highlights the fight against Naxalism, and commends security forces for ensuring peaceful elections.

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has urged police organisations nationwide to make the fight against narcotics a central operational priority, stressing that the campaign must deliver results before the end of 2029.

He said drug trafficking not only endangers young people but can also generate funds for groups hostile to India’s national interests.

Addressing personnel at the National Police Memorial on Wednesday, Shah linked the drive against drugs to the country’s broader internal security goals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has fixed December 31, 2029, as the deadline for achieving a drug-free India, a target Shah described as a matter of national importance.

The ceremony coincided with Police Commemoration Day, when the country remembers police personnel who lost their lives while performing their duties.

As part of the awareness campaign, Shah flagged off a motorcycle rally carrying the message ‘Fight Against Drugs’.

Around 90 riders representing states, Union Territories, Central Armed Police Forces and other central police organisations took part.

Security forces credited with major gains against Naxalism

Shah described 2026 as a landmark year for India’s police and security agencies, pointing to the government’s stated achievement of ending decades of Naxalism by March 31, 2026.

He acknowledged the contributions of the Chhattisgarh Police, Central Armed Police Forces, Central Reserve Police Force and its specialised CoBRA units in operations against the insurgency.

Citing the human cost of the conflict, the Home Minister said violence linked to Naxalism had claimed the lives of more than 3,600 security personnel and around 13,700 civilians between 1981 and March 2026.

He also praised police personnel for their discipline, courage, patience and commitment, saying their conduct had played a vital role in protecting the country’s internal security.

CAPFs play a crucial role beyond border duties.

The Home Minister described police and security personnel as indispensable to the country’s internal defence system.

He extended particular appreciation to members of the Central Armed Police Forces, who serve not only along India’s borders but also undertake security assignments in different parts of the country.

Their responsibilities, Shah noted, extend well beyond routine deployments. Personnel are frequently required to work away from their families during elections, festivals, public demonstrations and other sensitive situations, often remaining on duty for long periods to ensure that essential public and democratic activities continue without disruption.

He said the smooth conduct of elections and the protection of democratic institutions would be difficult to achieve without the contribution of the CAPFs.

West Bengal election security highlighted

Shah also addressed the issue of violence during elections, referring to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as states where electoral violence had been brought under control, while noting that West Bengal had faced the problem for an extended period.

He said the latest West Bengal Assembly elections marked a significant achievement for the security forces, as polling and the electoral process were completed without a fatality. According to Shah, the performance of the CAPFs had established an important benchmark for election security.

Nation remembers police personnel killed in the line of duty

Police Commemoration Day is observed every year on October 21 in memory of 10 Central Reserve Police Force personnel killed in an ambush by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh in 1959.

The occasion also honours police personnel across India who have died while carrying out their duties.

The National Police Memorial in New Delhi, where the tribute ceremony was held, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018.
