Ashoke Sen Makes History as First Indian to Receive Oskar Klein Medal
BENGALURU: One of India’s leading theoretical physicists, Ashoke Sen, has earned a place in the history of international science by becoming the first Indian to receive the Oskar Klein Medal.
The distinction recognises his influential research into some of the most complex problems in modern physics, including the mathematical foundations of string theory.
The announcement was made by the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS) in Bengaluru, where Sen holds a professorship.
The medal is an international recognition associated with Stockholm University and the Nobel Committee for Physics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
It has been presented annually since 1988.
Sen’s achievement adds to an already exceptional collection of international honours.
He has previously received the Dirac Medal and the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, reflecting the significance of his contributions to research into the fundamental laws governing the universe.
Research that has shaped modern theoretical physics
Much of Sen’s scientific work addresses questions that remain at the frontiers of physics.
His contributions to S-duality, the calculation of black hole entropy and string field theory have helped researchers investigate how different descriptions of physical systems may be connected.
In announcing the award, ICTS described Sen as an internationally recognised pioneer whose work has played a major role in shaping contemporary string theory.
He is an ICTS-Infosys Madhava Chair Professor.
String theory is among the theoretical approaches developed to address a longstanding difficulty in physics: how to describe gravity within the same broad framework as quantum mechanics.
While quantum theory explains the behaviour of matter and interactions at extremely small scales, gravity is described by a different theoretical framework.
Bringing the two together remains one of the major unsolved challenges in fundamental science.
Rather than treating the basic constituents of nature as dimensionless points, string theory proposes that they may be represented by tiny vibrating strings.
Scientists continue to investigate whether this approach can provide a consistent account of the universe across different scales.
Its status as a complete description of nature, however, remains unconfirmed experimentally.
As part of the medal-related programme, Sen delivered a lecture at Stockholm University on Thursday. Titled Gravity from Strings and Strings from Gravity, the presentation explored the relationship between two central ideas in theoretical physics.
Indian researchers in the international spotlight
Sen’s recognition forms part of a wider record of achievements by Indian and Indian-origin scientists in fundamental physics.
The Dirac Medal was awarded to theoretical physicist Deepak Dhar earlier this year, according to the information announced about the honour.
Dhar has also received the Boltzmann Medal, placing him among a small group of researchers recognised by both awards.
Another notable distinction went to Jainendra Jain, an Indian-origin American physicist connected with several institutions in India, who was named a Wolf Prize laureate last year.
The Dirac, Boltzmann and Wolf prizes are among the major international distinctions in physics, recognising research that has substantially advanced the discipline.
Although they are often discussed alongside the world’s most prestigious scientific awards, each has its own purpose and selection process.
For Sen, the Oskar Klein Medal is a further acknowledgment of decades of work exploring questions at the intersection of gravity, quantum physics and the structure of the universe.
His achievement also highlights the continuing international influence of Indian scientific research.
