Trump Warns Iran of Further US Military Action as Hormuz Crisis Deepens

The US president says Washington could intensify its campaign to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons, while Iran threatens wider retaliation if American and Israeli attacks resume.

WASHINGTON: The prospect of a renewed and potentially more destructive confrontation with Iran has raised fresh concerns across West Asia after US President Donald Trump signalled that Washington could expand its military campaign.

At the same time, he predicted that the conflict would end soon and promised that oil and petrol prices would fall once the fighting was over.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Trump defended the American military operation, arguing that earlier administrations should have acted to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

He indicated that the current campaign might not have reached its limits, leaving open the possibility of additional military action.

Trump maintained that preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon was essential, even if the campaign attracted criticism.

He described the American strikes as highly damaging and said the United States might take further steps.

At a campaign event at Sioux Gateway Airport in Sioux City, Iowa, Trump struck a more confident note about the war’s duration.

He said the conflict would be brought to an end soon, regardless of how the outcome was achieved, and predicted a sharp decline in fuel costs and oil prices.

His remarks come as the confrontation, which began in late February, continues to disrupt regional security and energy supplies.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for international oil and gas shipments, has intensified concerns about global energy markets.

Attacks on vessels and casualties among civilians have added to the humanitarian and economic consequences.

Tehran threatens wider retaliation

Iran has warned that any fresh American or Israeli strikes on its territory could trigger attacks extending beyond military installations.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Tehran has threatened to target US bases as well as airports, pipelines and other civilian infrastructure in neighbouring West Asian countries if hostilities resume.

During the earlier phase of the conflict, Iranian attacks reportedly caused substantial damage to American military facilities, diplomatic premises and the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain.

Iran also struck energy and industrial sites in the United Arab Emirates, a major gas facility in Qatar and airports in Dubai, Kuwait and Bahrain.

The newspaper reported that Tehran has threatened to make any subsequent round of fighting more damaging.

Such warnings come as the United States, Israel and regional partners face pressure on their supplies of air-defence interceptors used to destroy incoming missiles and other aerial threats.

The availability of these defensive systems could become an important factor if hostilities intensify.

However, the extent of remaining interceptor stocks and the operational readiness of the countries involved have not been independently established in the information available.

Iran warns of consequences for civilians and global economy

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has also cautioned against a resumption of attacks.

He has warned that renewed fighting could endanger civilian lives, undermine the welfare of countries throughout the region and inflict serious damage on the world economy.

The scale of Iran’s remaining missile capability is another concern for military planners.

Analysts estimate that Tehran retains hundreds or potentially thousands of ballistic missiles.

American and regional officials reportedly believe Iran has restarted limited production by drawing on stored components and facilities located underground.

These assessments suggest that the risk of further attacks remains significant, even after the damage inflicted during the initial phase of the war.

The actual size of Iran’s operational arsenal and the pace of any renewed manufacturing remain difficult to verify independently.

Diplomatic efforts remain stalled

The military warnings have emerged against a backdrop of stalled negotiations. Efforts to reach a peace agreement have yet to produce a breakthrough, while the continuing disruption around the Strait of Hormuz threatens energy shipments and adds uncertainty to the global economic outlook.

Trump’s expectation of an imminent end to the war therefore contrasts with Tehran’s warning that any renewed strikes could widen the conflict. Whether diplomatic efforts can prevent another round of attacks remains uncertain.

With energy infrastructure, shipping routes and civilian facilities potentially exposed to further violence, the consequences of an escalation could extend well beyond the immediate battlefield.
