Former TMC MLA Khokon Das Arrested in Prayagraj Over Extortion Case, to Be Taken to West Bengal
Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Khokon Das, who represented the Bardhaman Dakshin Assembly constituency in West Bengal, was arrested in Prayagraj on Sunday.
The operation was carried out by a team from West Bengal Police with assistance from local law enforcement authorities.
According to police officials, Khokon Das was taken into custody near the Handia Toll Plaza in Prayagraj. He is wanted in connection with multiple criminal cases registered in West Bengal, including allegations of extortion and other serious offences.
After completing the necessary legal formalities, West Bengal Police is expected to take him back to the state on transit remand for further investigation.
Defeat in 2026 Assembly Election
Khokon Das, 59, had won the Bardhaman Dakshin Assembly seat in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections and was considered one of the influential leaders within the Trinamool Congress.
However, in the 2026 Assembly elections, he contested again from the same constituency but was defeated by BJP candidate Moumita Biswas Mishra.
Over the years, Das has frequently made headlines, not only for his political influence but also for several controversial statements that attracted public attention.
Arrested While Travelling to Delhi
Police sources said that Khokon Das was travelling from Kolkata to Delhi in a Toyota Fortuner SUV when he was intercepted.
The vehicle was being driven by a chauffeur, who was also detained for questioning.
At around 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, police teams reportedly laid a trap near Handia Toll Plaza and successfully apprehended the former legislator.
The vehicle was seized and taken to the local police station as part of the investigation.
Following the arrest, the West Bengal Police team immediately left for Prayagraj city to complete transit remand proceedings before taking Khokon Das back to West Bengal, where he will face further legal action in the cases registered against him.
