₹3.20 Crore Unearthed from Underground Drums in Prayagraj; Income Tax Team Continues Excavation
PRAYAGRAJ: An investigation into the recovery of a massive cash stash buried beneath a house in Prayagraj has taken a significant turn, with the Income Tax Department confirming that three blue drums contained more than Rs 3.20 crore.
However, the operation is far from over, as officials suspect that additional cash or other material could still be concealed beneath the premises.
After four days of investigation, the department completed the counting of currency recovered from the three containers on Saturday. Officials put the total at Rs 3,20,93,000.
The cash, comprising bundles of Rs 500 notes wrapped in cloth, has been seized and deposited in the property room of Nawabganj police station.
Excavation inside the house continued throughout Saturday under the supervision of police and Income Tax officials.
Labourers have been deployed in shifts as the teams attempt to establish whether more hidden valuables remain underground.
Investigators have also taken possession of documents relating to immovable properties reportedly purchased over the past six years.
The discovery followed a police operation conducted on the night of October 28 at the residence of Rajesh Yadav and his brother Rakesh Yadav in Baripur Ramnagar village under Nawabganj police station limits.
During the search, officers came across three blue plastic drums buried beneath the ground. Each contained bundles of Rs 500 currency notes concealed inside pieces of cloth.
The extraordinary recovery prompted the involvement of senior police officers and the Income Tax Department. A 14-member team led by Assistant Director Abhay Sonkar has been examining the case.
Meanwhile, police are questioning Rajesh, his brother Rakesh and other family members and relatives to trace the origin, movement and ownership of the money.
Preliminary investigation has reportedly indicated a possible link between the cash and Pune, although the identity of the person from whom the money allegedly originated and the circumstances surrounding its transfer remain unclear.
Neighbourly Dispute May Have Triggered Police Action
Investigators are also examining how the family came under police scrutiny after reportedly living with substantial financial resources for several years.
According to sources, Rajesh Yadav and his family had allegedly been using money brought from Pune over a period of nearly six years. The funds were reportedly spent on purchasing land, acquiring vehicles and setting up a new business.
A dispute with a neighbour during Navratri is believed to have brought the family under the scanner. The disagreement reportedly followed a vehicle collision and escalated into a physical altercation, resulting in the registration of a police case.
The neighbour is said to have drawn the police’s attention to the family’s financial activities, raising questions about how it had accumulated considerable wealth within a relatively short period.
Police subsequently began examining possible links to theft, robbery or cybercrime networks.
It was during this investigation that officers searched the property on October 28 and stumbled upon the three underground drums containing crores of rupees. Subsequent inquiries reportedly pointed towards Pune as a possible source of the money.
Several Questions Remain Unanswered
Despite the recovery of Rs 3.20 crore, investigators are yet to establish the complete financial trail. The alleged Pune connection has raised several questions about the movement of such a large amount of cash and the people involved.
Among the key issues being examined are whether the money belonged to a businessman or wealthy individual in Pune and how much cash Rajesh and Rakesh Yadav actually brought back to their village.
Investigators are also trying to identify other individuals who may have accompanied the brothers or assisted in transporting the money over the approximately 1,400-kilometre journey between Pune and Prayagraj.
The mode of transportation used to move such a substantial amount remains unknown.
Another major question concerns why the alleged owner of the money in Pune did not approach the police or lodge a complaint over the disappearance of such a large sum.
The duration for which the cash remained buried, the identities of those in whose names properties were acquired and the extent of investments made from the alleged Pune funds are also under scrutiny.
Police have yet to establish the identity of the alleged Pune-based source of the money or explain how the information about the buried cash came to light after nearly six years.
Meanwhile, the continuing excavation has added another dimension to the investigation. Officials are yet to determine whether anything else has been concealed inside the property.
The inquiry is expected to focus on establishing the source of the cash, identifying all those involved, and tracing the assets allegedly acquired using the money.
