Delhi-Varanasi Bullet Train Corridor Gets PM Modi’s Approval; Journey to Take Just 3 Hours 33 Minutes

North-East High-Speed Rail Corridor to connect Delhi with Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam; Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurates second Sleeper Vande Bharat service between Varanasi and New Delhi.

VARANASI: Travel between the national capital and Varanasi could soon become significantly faster, with the proposed North-East Bullet Train Corridor receiving approval from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The ambitious high-speed rail project is expected to reduce the journey between Delhi and Varanasi to approximately three hours and 33 minutes.

Announcing the development in Varanasi on Saturday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw described the project as a major festive-season gift for the country.

He said the proposed corridor would establish high-speed rail connectivity between Delhi and several important cities across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam, strengthening links between northern and eastern India.

The announcement came during a railway event at Banaras railway station, where Vaishnaw, accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, flagged off the country’s second Sleeper Vande Bharat Express service connecting Varanasi with New Delhi.

The train departed at 5.15 pm.

The programme also featured the inauguration of two MEMU services aimed at improving regional connectivity.

The Varanasi City-Rajatalab MEMU was virtually flagged off for its journey from Varanasi Junction (Cantt), while the Banaras-Prayagraj Rambagh MEMU was launched from Rambagh station.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya joined the programme virtually from Rambagh.

All three services operated as inaugural special trains on their first day.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the new MEMU connections would strengthen links between two prominent spiritual destinations while also facilitating travel between important educational centres.

He highlighted the significance of improved railway connectivity for passengers travelling between Varanasi and Prayagraj.

Explaining the broader vision behind the proposed bullet train network, Vaishnaw said the North-East Corridor would bring together several historically and culturally significant cities, extending connectivity from the national capital through Uttar Pradesh and onwards to Assam.

He also emphasised that the proposed bullet train would be designed and developed under the Make in India initiative, reflecting India’s growing capabilities in advanced railway technology.

The Railway Minister further referred to the encouraging response to the country’s first Guwahati-Sealdah Sleeper Vande Bharat service.

According to him, the train has attracted considerable appreciation, including from international media organisations that examined its features and performance.

The proposed high-speed corridor, once implemented, is expected to mark a major transformation in intercity rail travel, bringing distant regions closer and reducing journey times across several important destinations.
