A local court has directed AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi to appear before it following a plea claiming he violated the Constitution by raising a slogan in support of Palestine during a Parliamentary session.
The petition, filed by lawyer Virendra Gupta, alleges that Owaisi expressed solidarity with Palestine during his oath-taking ceremony as a Member of Parliament, contravening constitutional principles.
Gupta stated that the five-time MP’s actions undermined constitutional and legal values. He revealed that the initial petition, submitted to the MP/MLA court on July 12, had been dismissed.
However, District Judge Sudhir accepted the plea and issued a notice to Owaisi on Saturday, instructing him to appear in court on January 7.
Gupta expressed personal offense over Owaisi’s slogan, asserting that it went against the Constitution. The incident occurred on June 25, when Owaisi took his oath as Hyderabad MP.
After completing the oath, Owaisi raised a slogan supporting the conflict-ridden West Asian nation from the Parliamentary podium. The chairman subsequently ordered the remarks to be expunged from the record.
Owaisi later defended his statement to reporters outside the House, asserting that there was nothing inappropriate in his slogan: “Jai Bheem, Jai Meem, Jai Telangana, Jai Palestine.”
