Indian High Commission Official Found Dead Inside Mission Premises in Bangladesh’s Chattogram
An official posted at the High Commission of India was found dead inside the Indian mission premises in Chattogram on Tuesday morning, triggering concern among diplomatic officials and local authorities.
According to reports in Bangladeshi media, the deceased has been identified as Naren Dhar, 38, who was serving as an Assistant Protocol Officer at the Assistant High Commission of India in Chattogram.
Quoting police officials, Bangladeshi news portal bdnews24.com reported that Dhar’s body was discovered near the bathroom entrance of a data entry room located on the second floor of the old visa centre building within the mission compound.
Apart from the main Indian High Commission in Dhaka, India also operates four Assistant High Commissions in Bangladesh — in Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi and Sylhet.
According to a report by The Daily Star, Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Hasan Md Showkat Ali said officials at the mission became concerned after repeated attempts to contact Dhar from his room received no response.
Police were subsequently informed and reached the premises for investigation.
Following preliminary formalities, the body was sent to the morgue at Chattogram Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police officials stated that the initial inquest did not reveal any visible external injuries or abnormalities.
However, authorities said the exact cause of death would only be confirmed after the autopsy report is completed.
Meanwhile, Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Amirul Islam told local media that an unnatural death case would be registered in connection with the incident.
He added that after the post-mortem process is completed, the body would be handed over to officials of the Indian mission.
Sources familiar with the matter said the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh is in contact with Dhar’s family and is extending necessary assistance during the process.
Officials are currently awaiting the autopsy findings, while further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the death are expected to emerge after the investigation progresses.
