Jacqueline Fernandez Balances Money-Laundering Trial With New Bollywood Projects

Mumbai: Jacqueline Fernandez’s Bollywood journey has entered an unusual phase, with a high-profile legal case unfolding alongside a determined effort to remain professionally active.

The actor, who rose to prominence through major commercial films, is currently facing proceedings in Delhi in connection with the money-laundering case linked to alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar.

At the same time, she continues to sign films and appear on screen, signalling that the legal controversy has not brought her acting career to a complete halt.

How the Sukesh Chandrashekhar Case Came to Involve Jacqueline

The case revolves around allegations against Sukesh Chandrashekhar, who investigators have accused of running an extensive extortion operation while lodged in Delhi’s Rohini jail.

According to the Enforcement Directorate, Chandrashekhar allegedly used impersonation, spoofed telephone calls, and false identities to convince victims that he was connected to senior government officials.

Investigators have alleged that the racket generated more than ₹200 crore.

The agency has also alleged that part of the money was spent on expensive gifts and other benefits for people in the film industry.

Jacqueline Fernandez is among those named in the proceedings.

Investigators have alleged that she received gifts and benefits valued at around ₹5.71 crore. These allegedly included luxury accessories, jewellery, watches and vehicles connected with members of her family.

The investigation has also referred to money transferred overseas to accounts associated with her siblings.

Fernandez, however, has maintained that she was deceived by Chandrashekhar.

Her stated position has been that she believed he was a well-connected businessman and a member of an influential South Indian political family, and that she did not know that the wealth and gifts associated with him were allegedly derived from criminal activity.

Charges Framed, Trial Moves Forward

The proceedings took a significant turn in May 2026 when Additional Sessions Judge Prashant Sharma ordered that charges be framed against Fernandez, Chandrashekhar and 15 other accused.

The court found that the material before it was sufficient at that stage to raise a strong suspicion against the accused.

The order referred, among other things, to statements concerning Fernandez’s contact with Chandrashekhar and the gifts and financial benefits allegedly received by her.

Formal charges under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act were framed on June 3, 2026. Fernandez pleaded not guilty.

She subsequently approached the Supreme Court challenging the lower court’s order. On June 24, the Supreme Court allowed her to withdraw the petition, while giving her the liberty to pursue remedies available to her under the law.

The case is therefore continuing, and the allegations against Fernandez remain subject to the judicial process.

From Bollywood Breakthrough to a More Complicated Career

Fernandez’s career trajectory was once closely associated with mainstream commercial cinema.

Her breakthrough came with Salman Khan’s 2014 action-comedy Kick, which established her as a prominent Bollywood performer.

Her association with Khan subsequently remained visible, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she stayed at his Panvel farmhouse.

Over time, however, her professional circumstances changed as the legal controversy surrounding Chandrashekhar intensified.

There has been no formal announcement of an industry-wide ban against Fernandez. Nevertheless, industry observers have pointed to a gradual reduction in some of the highly visible associations that once surrounded her.

For actors working in an industry heavily influenced by public image, such changes can affect opportunities even without any official decision to exclude someone.

In Fernandez’s case, the effect has been less about a dramatic disappearance and more about a noticeable change in the scale and nature of her public presence.

Fernandez herself has largely avoided turning the issue into a public feud with the industry.

Films Keep Her Career Moving

Despite the legal proceedings, Fernandez has continued to work.

She appeared in the 2025 action thriller Fateh, alongside Sonu Sood, before returning to the popular Housefull franchise with Housefull 5, which arrived in cinemas in June that year.

Her work has continued into 2026 with Welcome to the Jungle, an ensemble action-comedy directed by Ahmed Khan.

The film brings together a large cast and places Fernandez within a broader commercial ensemble rather than around a conventional solo-star vehicle.

Her next reported project represents an even more noticeable change in direction.

Fernandez has signed a supernatural thriller inspired by the classic film Woh Kaun Thi?

The yet-to-be-titled project, produced by Khyati Madaan, is set in a small North Indian town.

Those associated with the production have described it as a psychological and atmospheric supernatural story rather than a conventional vampire or monster movie.

Fernandez is expected to portray a contemporary working woman who becomes caught up in a series of disturbing and unexplained events.

The film is also expected to combine horror with action, giving the actor an opportunity to move beyond the glamour-driven roles and comedy-oriented performances with which much of her career has been associated.

Production was expected to commence around September 2026.

A Different Kind of Career Challenge

Fernandez’s present situation does not fit easily into the conventional narrative of a Bollywood career ending because of controversy.

जांच के दौरान यह भी आरोप सामने आया कि कथित अवैध धन का इस्तेमाल महंगे उपहारों और अन्य सुविधाओं पर किया गया, जिनका लाभ कुछ फिल्मी हस्तियों तक पहुंचा।

जैकलीन फर्नांडिस भी इस मामले में आरोपी हैं। जांच एजेंसी का आरोप है कि उन्हें लगभग ₹5.71 करोड़ मूल्य के उपहार और अन्य लाभ मिले। इनमें महंगे बैग, आभूषण, घड़ियां और परिवार के सदस्यों से जुड़े वाहन का उल्लेख किया गया है। जांच में विदेशों में उनके भाई-बहनों से जुड़े खातों में रकम भेजे जाने की बात भी सामने आई है।

हालांकि जैकलीन ने इन आरोपों को स्वीकार नहीं किया है। उनका कहना रहा है कि चंद्रशेखर ने उन्हें गुमराह किया था। अभिनेत्री के मुताबिक उन्हें उसकी आपराधिक गतिविधियों और कथित तौर पर धन के स्रोत की जानकारी नहीं थी।

अदालत में आरोप तय, जैकलीन ने खुद को बताया निर्दोष

मामले में 2026 के दौरान महत्वपूर्ण कानूनी घटनाक्रम हुआ। अतिरिक्त सत्र न्यायाधीश प्रशांत शर्मा ने मई में जैकलीन फर्नांडिस, सुकेश चंद्रशेखर और 15 अन्य आरोपियों के खिलाफ आरोप तय करने का आदेश दिया।

अदालत ने प्रथम दृष्टया उपलब्ध सामग्री को आरोपियों के खिलाफ मजबूत संदेह पैदा करने के लिए पर्याप्त माना। आदेश में जैकलीन और चंद्रशेखर के बीच संपर्क तथा अभिनेत्री को कथित तौर पर मिले वित्तीय लाभ और महंगे सामान का भी उल्लेख किया गया।

3 जून 2026 को प्रिवेंशन ऑफ मनी लॉन्ड्रिंग एक्ट यानी पीएमएलए के तहत औपचारिक रूप से आरोप तय किए गए। जैकलीन ने आरोपों से इनकार करते हुए खुद को दोषी नहीं माना।

इसके बाद उन्होंने निचली अदालत के आदेश को सुप्रीम कोर्ट में चुनौती दी। 24 जून को शीर्ष अदालत ने उन्हें अपनी याचिका वापस लेने की अनुमति दी और कानून के तहत उपलब्ध उचित उपाय अपनाने की स्वतंत्रता दी।

इस मामले में अंतिम फैसला अभी नहीं आया है और जैकलीन के खिलाफ लगाए गए आरोप न्यायिक प्रक्रिया के अधीन हैं।

‘किक’ से मिली बड़ी पहचान, बदला करियर का माहौल

फिल्म में जैकलीन एक आधुनिक कामकाजी महिला की भूमिका निभाएंगी, जिसकी जिंदगी रहस्यमय और डरावनी घटनाओं से घिर जाती है।
