Man Charged with Attempted Assassination After Shooting at Secret Service Agent During White House Dinner Event

A 31-year-old man has been charged with attempting to assassinate former U.S. President Donald Trump following a shooting incident during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C.

The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California, appeared in court on Monday.

Prosecutors alleged that his actions during the chaotic incident on Saturday night amounted to an attempt on the president’s life.

According to authorities, gunfire broke out during the event, forcing security personnel to quickly escort Trump away from the stage while attendees took cover under tables.

During the hearing, prosecutor Jocelyn Ballantine stated that Allen had attempted to assassinate the president.

In addition to this charge, he also faces multiple firearm-related offenses, including transporting weapons across state lines and discharging a firearm during a violent crime.

Allen did not enter a plea during his court appearance. He told the court he would answer questions truthfully and mentioned that he holds a master’s degree in computer science.

The US Department of Justice is leading the prosecution.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew Sharbaugh ordered that Allen remain in custody as the case proceeds.

A further hearing regarding his detention has been scheduled for later this week.

The court also appointed two public defenders to represent him.

One of them noted that Allen has no prior criminal record and, under the law, must be presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

In the aftermath of the incident, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the shooting as the third serious assassination attempt linked to Trump in recent times, referring to earlier incidents in 2024.

She also commented on the suspect’s alleged writings, suggesting they reflected broader political rhetoric seen in public discourse.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are continuing to gather evidence to understand the full circumstances behind the attack.

The incident has once again raised concerns about security at high-profile public events, while also highlighting the importance of due process as the legal proceedings move forward.
