Pan-India Guru Tegh Bahadur Memorial Yatra Reaches Prayagraj, Honouring the Legacy of the Ninth Sikh Guru

Prayagraj: A nationwide memorial journey commemorating the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, arrived in Prayagraj on Sunday after travelling across several states, including Assam and Uttar Pradesh.

The yatra, organised to pay tribute to the revered spiritual leader and his sacrifice for religious freedom, received a warm welcome from residents, social organisations and members of the Sikh community upon reaching the city.

The initiative aims to spread awareness about Guru Tegh Bahadur’s teachings, values and historic contribution to protecting human rights and freedom of faith.

Organisers said the journey is designed to connect people across the country with the Guru’s message of courage, tolerance and selfless service.

Throughout its route, the yatra has visited numerous towns and cities, where people gathered to remember the Guru’s extraordinary life and sacrifice.

Leading the procession was Diljeet Singh, General Secretary of the Guru Singh Sabha in Katra Gulab Singh.

He explained that the yatra is not merely a commemorative event but also an educational campaign intended to introduce younger generations to the ideals championed by Guru Tegh Bahadur.

Along the route, specially designed vehicles have been displaying photographs, historical information and artefacts associated with the Guru’s life, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of Sikh history and heritage.

The arrival of the yatra in Prayagraj was marked by a ceremonial welcome organised by local community leaders and representatives of various organisations.

Flowers were showered on participants, while members of the public gathered in large numbers to greet the procession.

Several prominent social workers, traders and public representatives joined the event, reflecting the broad support the initiative has received across different sections of society.

Speaking on the occasion, Karni Singh, Provincial President of the Provincial Trade Board, said Guru Tegh Bahadur’s life continues to inspire generations with its message of sacrifice and unwavering commitment to justice.

He noted that the Guru’s teachings remain relevant in modern times, particularly in promoting communal harmony, mutual respect and the protection of fundamental freedoms.

The procession travelled through several major locations in Prayagraj, including Balson Crossing, Medical College Crossing, Hanuman Mandir Crossing, Subhash Crossing, Pathar Girja Ghar, Nawab Yusuf Road, Railway Station and other prominent areas before reaching Katra Gulab Singh.

Residents lined the route to welcome participants, creating an atmosphere of respect and celebration.

A large number of local dignitaries and community leaders took part in the programme.

Among those present were Vinod Agrawal, Ravindra Mohan Goyal, Captain Prakash Mishra, Sanjay Gupta, Ajay Gupta, senior citizen representatives and members of various social organisations.

Their participation underscored the significance of the event beyond religious boundaries.

Following a brief halt and rest period, the yatra resumed its onward journey in the evening.

Organisers said the campaign would continue to travel through different regions of the country, carrying Guru Tegh Bahadur’s message of unity, courage and service to wider audiences.

Community members expressed hope that such initiatives would strengthen awareness about India’s diverse spiritual traditions and inspire younger generations to learn from the lives of great historical figures.

Across India, similar commemorative programmes have been organised by Sikh organisations, religious institutions and cultural groups to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

Processions, seminars, exhibitions and interfaith gatherings have been held in cities including Delhi, Amritsar, Patna Sahib and Chandigarh.

These events have focused on highlighting the Guru’s historic sacrifice in defence of religious liberty and his enduring contribution to India’s pluralistic heritage.

As the yatra continues its journey, organisers believe it serves as a powerful reminder of the values Guru Tegh Bahadur stood for—fearlessness in the face of oppression, respect for all faiths and a lifelong commitment to serving humanity.

His legacy, they say, remains a guiding light for millions across the country and around the world.
