Tharoor Draws Line on Rahul Gandhi’s Travel Plans as Electoral Row Intensifies
A question about Rahul Gandhi’s reported absence from Delhi drew a curt response from Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday, who made it clear that he would not speak on behalf of another party leader.
His remarks came amid a political dispute over Gandhi’s reported visit to Vietnam while opposition protests against the electoral roll revision exercise were under way in the national capital.
Tharoor, speaking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, said he was not a “travel agent” and saw no reason to explain another person’s movements.
He added that individuals had their own responsibilities, declining to be drawn into questions about why Gandhi was reportedly away from Delhi.
The BJP has seized on the reported trip to question Gandhi’s absence at a time when opposition parties have been campaigning against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and raising objections concerning Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The controversy has added another point of confrontation between the ruling party and the Congress.
According to reports citing party leaders, Gandhi travelled to Vietnam for a short break expected to last four days.
The visit reportedly followed his participation in the Congress’s Goy Rakhon Yatra in Goa. Details of the trip have not been established here beyond those reported by the sources cited in the coverage.
The timing has attracted attention because Gandhi had recently been at the forefront of the opposition’s campaign in Delhi.
He joined INDIA bloc protests, took the lead at street demonstrations and was detained by police on multiple occasions, according to reports.
The campaign had given Congress workers a renewed rallying point around allegations of irregularities in the electoral process.
In Goa, Gandhi had used public meetings to mount a broader attack on the BJP leadership and the conduct of elections.
He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of being involved in what he termed “vote chori”, or theft of votes.
At a gathering in Margao, Gandhi alleged that the chief election commissioner was responsible for implementing the alleged manipulation, Shah for organising its execution and Modi for directing the overall plan.
The remarks represent Gandhi’s political accusations and do not, by themselves, establish wrongdoing by the individuals named.
The dispute over his reported travel has thus unfolded alongside a wider argument over electoral integrity.
The opposition has been pressing its objections to the voter-list revision process, while the BJP has questioned Gandhi’s absence during the demonstrations.
Tharoor’s refusal to comment leaves the Congress leader’s travel arrangements separate from the arguments he and his party have made about elections.
Rather than offering further information about the trip, Tharoor confined his response to the principle that another politician’s schedule was not his to explain.
His brief answer did little to settle the political argument, but made clear that he would not become a spokesperson for Gandhi’s personal decisions.
