Trump Blames France’s School Unrest on Migration and Islam as Student Protests Spread

US president makes unsupported claim as French authorities report 488 arrests and 43 injured security personnel during nationwide demonstrations

WASHINGTON/PARIS: A widening student movement in France has drawn an intervention from US President Donald Trump, who has portrayed the unrest as a consequence of immigration and what he described as the growing influence of Islam.

Trump asserted in a Tuesday post on Truth Social, rejecting the idea that the demonstrations were primarily about problems within France’s education system.

He argued instead that large-scale migration was behind the turmoil and alleged that Islam was seeking greater control over the country.

No evidence was offered in the post to establish a connection between the student protests and either migration or an organised effort by Muslims to take over France.

The comments have come against the backdrop of a rapidly expanding mobilisation among French high school students.

What began as complaints about shortages of teachers and inadequate school facilities has developed into a nationwide movement, with demonstrations now attracting support from sections of the teaching profession, parents and organised labour.

Large turnout, hundreds detained

Tuesday saw one of the biggest days of mobilisation since the protests began. France’s Interior Ministry estimated that 256,000 people participated nationally. Organisers affiliated with trade unions gave a substantially higher figure of 450,000.

The day ended with hundreds of arrests. Officials said 488 people were taken into custody, while 43 members of the security forces suffered injuries.

Paris experienced both peaceful and confrontational scenes. The main demonstration passed without major incident for much of its route, but disorder was reported toward its eastern end.

Police used tear gas after some protesters threw stones at officers wearing riot gear.

Authorities said around 300 people tried to engage police in confrontations.

The unrest has prompted President Emmanuel Macron to bring senior officials together for an emergency discussion, underscoring the seriousness with which the government is viewing the escalation.

Movement began inside schools

The present crisis did not begin as a debate over immigration or religion. Students initially focused their anger on conditions in their schools, particularly shortages of teachers and the state of educational facilities.

Teenagers, largely between 15 and 17, began preventing access to school buildings in late September. The tactic soon spread from individual institutions to a much broader campaign in several French cities.

Teachers, parents and trade union activists subsequently joined the mobilisation, giving the movement a wider social dimension.

The protests have also produced violent incidents in some areas, creating a difficult balancing act for the government.

Officials are under pressure to respond to complaints about education while simultaneously preventing confrontations between demonstrators and police from escalating.

Trump’s intervention draws political context

The US president’s comments came as immigration has become an increasingly prominent theme within the MAGA movement ahead of the US midterm elections.

Trump was not the only prominent conservative voice to focus on the French unrest. Videos of the demonstrations were circulated online by several of his supporters.

Conservative commentator Glenn Beck described the events as a warning for other Western nations and alleged that an international socialist network was working to weaken Western societies.

Those assertions were not accompanied by evidence establishing such an organised connection to the French student demonstrations.

The timing is also significant for France. The country is heading towards its 2027 presidential election, when voters will choose Emmanuel Macron’s successor.

The unrest therefore arrives at a politically sensitive moment, with education, public order, immigration and national identity already prominent subjects of debate.

For the French government, however, the immediate challenge remains closer to home: containing street violence while addressing the education-related grievances that brought students onto the streets in the first place.
