Twisha Sharma Death Case: MP Government Orders Inquiry Against Retired Judge Giribala Singh Amid Dowry Death Probe

The Madhya Pradesh government has initiated formal administrative proceedings against retired judge Giribala Singh in connection with the death of her daughter-in-law, model and actor Twisha Sharma, whose death earlier this month sparked allegations of dowry harassment, questions over the police investigation, and growing public attention across the state.

The move marks the first official departmental action taken against Giribala Singh since a criminal case was registered in the matter.

Singh, who previously served as a district judge, is currently functioning as the chairperson of the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Bhopal.

Twisha Sharma, 33, was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal earlier this month under circumstances that continue to remain controversial.

Following complaints by her family members, an FIR was registered against members of her husband’s family, including Giribala Singh, under provisions related to dowry death and cruelty.

MP Government Begins Formal Inquiry

In an official communication dated May 20, the state’s Food, Civil Supplies,s and Consumer Protection Department informed the Registrar of the Madhya Pradesh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission that criminal charges had been registered against Giribala Singh at Katara Hills Police Station.

The government letter referred specifically to the FIR lodged by the Bhopal Police Commissioner’s office and directed that an inquiry be initiated under Rule 9(2) of the Consumer Protection Rules, 2020, which govern the appointment, conduct, and removal of presidents and members of consumer commissions.

The communication instructed authorities to conduct an inquiry into the allegations and submit a report at the earliest.

The letter stated that an inquiry should be carried out regarding the criminal case registered against Giribala Singh in her capacity as chairperson of the district consumer commission.

Officials confirmed that the communication was issued by the office of the deputy secretary in the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department after the matter had been referred by the registrar of the state consumer commission.

Case Draws Public Attention Due to the Accused Family’s Background

The case has generated intense discussion in Madhya Pradesh largely because of the influential background of the accused family and the allegations made by Twisha Sharma’s relatives regarding the handling of the investigation.

Twisha’s family has repeatedly claimed that the investigation process may have been influenced due to the stature and legal background of those named in the case.

Questions have also been raised over the postmortem examination and the circumstances surrounding her death.

Her relatives have alleged that several aspects of the investigation require independent scrutiny and have demanded both a second postmortem examination at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, and a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

CM Mohan Yadav Announces Move Towards CBI Probe

As pressure mounted publicly, Mohan Yadav, earlier this week, stated that the state government would formally write to the CBI seeking an investigation into the matter.

The announcement came amid growing demands from Twisha Sharma’s family, social media discussions, and public scrutiny over the case.

The possibility of a CBI inquiry has now added another layer of seriousness to the investigation, especially given the allegations involving a former judicial officer.

If approved, a CBI probe could potentially involve:

  • Re-examination of forensic evidence
  • Review of the postmortem findings
  • Reconstruction of the timeline leading to Twisha’s death
  • Analysis of electronic records and communication
  • Examination of allegations related to dowry harassment

Police Maintain Probe Points Towards Suicide

Despite the allegations made by the family, senior police officials in Bhopal have maintained that the evidence gathered so far does not indicate murder.

Sanjay Kumar recently stated that the investigation at this stage points more towards suicide rather than homicide.

His remarks, however, have further intensified the controversy, with Twisha’s relatives arguing that conclusions are being drawn prematurely before a comprehensive independent inquiry is completed.

The family has expressed concern that the investigation should remain open to all possibilities until every aspect is examined thoroughly.

FIR Registered Under Dowry Death and Cruelty Charges

The criminal case registered in the matter reportedly includes charges related to dowry death and cruelty against a married woman.

Under Indian law, dowry death cases are treated with significant seriousness, especially when a woman dies under suspicious circumstances within a certain period after marriage and allegations of harassment or cruelty emerge.

Investigators are now expected to examine:

  • Statements of family members
  • Financial transactions
  • Communication records
  • Medical history
  • Witness testimonies
  • Events leading up to Twisha’s death

Legal experts note that the involvement of a retired judicial officer in such a case makes the matter especially sensitive and likely to remain under close public and media scrutiny.

Questions Over Postmortem Continue

One of the most contentious aspects of the case has been the demand for a second postmortem examination.

Twisha Sharma’s family has argued that they are not fully satisfied with the initial medical findings and want an independent evaluation at AIIMS Delhi.

The demand reflects broader concerns often seen in high-profile cases where families seek external forensic review to rule out any possibility of procedural lapses or influence.

Earlier reports suggested that the family had approached the court seeking permission for a second postmortem, while also expressing fears regarding preservation of the body and forensic integrity.

Who Was Twisha Sharma?

Twisha Sharma was reportedly associated with modelling and entertainment work before her death.

Friends and relatives have described her as ambitious, independent,nt and professionally active. Following news of her death, tributes and messages seeking justice began circulating widely on social media.

The emotional nature of the case has amplified public engagement, particularly among women’s rights groups and social activists who argue that allegations involving dowry harassment continue to remain a serious issue despite decades of legal reforms.

Legal and Administrative Proceedings Now Running in Parallel

The case is now unfolding on multiple fronts simultaneously:

  • Criminal investigation by the police
  • Possible CBI referral
  • Administrative inquiry against Giribala Singh
  • Judicial scrutiny regarding forensic procedures
  • Public and media attention surrounding the allegations

The inquiry initiated by the Madhya Pradesh government could potentially examine whether Giribala Singh’s continuation in her official position remains appropriate while criminal proceedings are ongoing.

Depending on the findings, authorities may consider further disciplinary or administrative action under the applicable service and consumer protection rules.

Why the Case Matters Beyond One Family

The Twisha Sharma case has rapidly evolved beyond an individual family tragedy into a broader conversation about:

  • Dowry-related violence
  • Institutional accountability
  • Influence in criminal investigations
  • Transparency in forensic procedures
  • Public trust in the justice system

Legal observers note that cases involving influential individuals often attract heightened scrutiny because they test the credibility and independence of investigative agencies.

The state government’s decision to formally initiate an inquiry against a retired judge, therefore,e carries symbolic significance as well.

Investigation Likely to Remain Under Spotlight

With the possibility of a CBI investigation now being considered and the administrative inquiry officially underway, the case is expected to remain in public focus in the coming weeks.

For Twisha Sharma’s family, however, the legal developments represent more than headlines or procedural actions.

They continue to insist that they are seeking only one thing — a fair, transparent,nt and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of their daughter.
