Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Dream Run Continues: IPL Sensation Earns India Call-Up at Just 15

As one cricketing star named Surya prepared to make way, another with a remarkably similar name stepped firmly into the spotlight.

On Saturday, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the teenage batting sensation who captured the imagination of fans throughout IPL 2026, reached another landmark in his extraordinary journey by securing a place in India’s senior squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games later this year.

For the 15-year-old prodigy, the rise has been nothing short of remarkable. Having made his first-class debut only in January 2024, Sooryavanshi has climbed through the ranks at astonishing speed, earning a place on the international stage in just over two years.

His selection was among the biggest talking points when chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced India’s squads on Saturday.

The youngster’s inclusion came on the back of a breathtaking IPL season in which he topped the run-scoring charts, amassing 776 runs in 16 matches and establishing himself as one of the tournament’s most dominant performers.

Agarkar emphasized that Sooryavanshi’s age was never viewed as a barrier once the selection panel evaluated the impact of his performances.

“His performances have made the decision impossible to ignore,” Agarkar said. “We are fully aware of how young he is and how early he is in his cricketing journey. But talent like this is hard to overlook.”

The chairman of selectors highlighted the teenager’s maturity and consistency in one of the world’s most demanding cricket competitions.

According to Agarkar, what stood out was not only Sooryavanshi’s ability to score runs but also his capacity to thrive under immense pressure.

“Everyone has seen the kind of cricket he has played. It’s not just about one season.

For someone so young to consistently deliver in a tournament as competitive as the IPL is extremely impressive.

He can change games on his own, and that makes him a very special talent,” Agarkar noted.

Sooryavanshi’s rapid ascent has been building for some time. After attracting attention through age-group cricket and impressing in youth tournaments, including the Under-19 World Cup, he carried that momentum into the IPL.

His fearless approach, attacking strokeplay, and confidence against some of the world’s finest bowlers convinced selectors that he was ready for the next step in his career.

While acknowledging that international cricket presents a completely different challenge, Agarkar expressed confidence that the youngster possesses the temperament and skill to adapt successfully.

“We hope that whenever he gets the opportunity to represent India, he continues to showcase the same qualities he has displayed so far.

International cricket brings tougher tests, but he has shown tremendous potential. Ultimately, his performances have earned him this opportunity,” Agarkar said.

Although Sooryavanshi has broken into the national setup through the T20 format, the selectors are keen to ensure his development is handled carefully.

Agarkar stressed that there would be no rush to push the teenager into other formats before he is ready.

“At this stage, we are rewarding him in the format where he has excelled. As far as red-ball cricket is concerned, he is still at the beginning of his journey.

We are excited about what he has achieved in T20 cricket, but we want to progress step by step,” he explained.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also taking a measured approach to the youngster’s growth.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said that the board is closely tracking his progress and ensuring that every decision regarding his career is made with long-term development in mind.

“We are being extremely cautious about his future. The selectors, coaches, and technical experts are monitoring his progress closely and planning his pathway carefully,” Saikia said.

For now, however, Sooryavanshi has every reason to celebrate. In a remarkably short span, he has transformed from a promising young cricketer making his first-class debut into one of the brightest prospects in Indian cricket.

With a place in India’s senior T20 setup secured before even turning 16, the next chapter of his remarkable story is only just beginning.
