Yogi Adityanath Highlights Dalit Freedom Fighter Masuriya Din’s Legacy in Prayagraj
UP Chief Minister says national honour must extend beyond prominent political families; announces plans to name a crossing and an institution after the Pasi community leader
PRAYAGRAJ, Uttar Pradesh: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday called for greater recognition of lesser-known freedom fighters, invoking the contribution of Dalit leader Masuriya Din while taking a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Prayagraj.
Speaking at Mahashay Masuriyadin Smarak Inter College in Teliyarganj, where he unveiled a statue of the freedom fighter from the Pasi community, Adityanath said the struggle for India’s independence was not confined to prominent political figures such as Jawaharlal Nehru.
He argued that people from disadvantaged communities who fought for the country and worked for social upliftment deserved equal recognition.
The Chief Minister said public honour should not be treated as the preserve of a single family.
Those who challenged social discrimination, raised their voices for Dalits and other marginalised groups, and devoted their lives to the nation, he said, must be remembered with respect.
Masuriya Din’s political career included election to the Lok Sabha from Phulpur in 1952 and 1957, when he was elected alongside Nehru, according to the account cited at the event.
He was also associated with efforts to expand educational opportunities for Scheduled Castes.
Adityanath highlighted Masuriya Din’s role in opposing the British-era Criminal Tribes Act.
He said the legislation, introduced in 1871 after the uprising of 1857, subjected several communities—including the Pasi community—to stigma and humiliation.
Masuriya Din and Dr B. R. Ambedkar, he said, worked against the discriminatory law and helped bring about its abolition, enabling marginalised communities to seek a more dignified place in society.
The Chief Minister also spoke about the personal cost of Masuriya Din’s commitment to the freedom movement.
He said the leader spent around nine years in prison between 1932 and 1944 for mobilising people against British rule and continued his public-awareness work after his release.
Announcing further steps to preserve his legacy, Adityanath said the intersection where the statue has been installed would be named after Masuriya Din.
He asked the Prayagraj mayor to submit a proposal for the renaming. The government, he added, would also consider renaming an institution in the city after the freedom fighter and installing his statue there.
Adityanath said recognising historical figures was essential to social progress, arguing that a better understanding of the past could help improve the present and shape a stronger future.
He maintained that his government would take steps to ensure that Masuriya Din’s contribution did not remain overlooked.
The Chief Minister also recalled other figures associated with the history of the Pasi community.
He referred to Maharaja Bijli Pasi, whom he credited with establishing 12 forts in and around Lucknow in the 12th century as part of resistance to foreign invaders.
He also remembered Makkha Pasi and his wife, Uda Devi Pasi, who took up the fight against British forces after her husband’s death and died in the struggle.
Listing initiatives undertaken by his government, Adityanath said the fort associated with Maharaja Bijli Pasi in Lucknow had been renovated.
He also referred to the establishment of a Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) battalion named after freedom fighter Veerangana Uda Devi.
An equestrian statue of Uda Devi is also being installed in the state capital, he said.
The event, the Chief Minister said, was part of a broader effort to bring the contributions of historically under-recognised figures into public memory and acknowledge the role of marginalised communities in India’s freedom struggle.
