17-Hour Power Outage Leaves Residents of Prayagraj’s Old City Areas Frustrated Amid Scorching Heat

Prayagraj: Residents of several localities in Prayagraj’s old city, including Ranimandi, Bedan Tola and surrounding neighbourhoods, were forced to endure nearly 17 hours without electricity amid intense summer heat.

Prolonged power cuts and repeated technical faults disrupted daily life and left thousands of people struggling in difficult conditions.

According to residents, the electricity supply system in the old city virtually collapsed after multiple technical problems surfaced.

In several areas, power feeders tripped repeatedly, while electrical cables reportedly developed faults and even caught fire at some locations, worsening the situation.

Several Localities Left in Darkness

The worst-affected areas included Ranimandi, Bedan Tola, Chakradhar, Neem, Ganesh Gali, Hata and adjoining neighbourhoods.

Residents said the power outage began on Sunday night and continued until around 2:30 pm on Monday.

Even after the supply was restored, electricity continued to fluctuate due to recurring faults, causing further inconvenience.

The prolonged outage severely affected normal life, with residents struggling to cope with the sweltering weather and high humidity.

Water Supply and Daily Activities Affected

The power disruption also impacted essential services. Since water supply systems in many localities depend on electric pumps, several households faced shortages of drinking and domestic water.

Residents said the lack of electricity brought daily routines to a standstill.

Household chores were disrupted, shops and commercial establishments suffered losses, and people found it difficult to sleep through the night because of the oppressive heat.

Many elderly residents, children and patients reportedly faced additional difficulties due to the extended power cut.

Low Voltage and Repeated Tripping Add to Problems

Even in areas where electricity was partially restored, residents complained of extremely low voltage and repeated interruptions.

According to locals, power supply went off four to five times during the day in several neighbourhoods. The unstable supply damaged normal routines and increased public frustration.

People alleged that prolonged power cuts have become increasingly common during the summer season, affecting not only domestic life but also commercial and economic activities.

Scheduled Power Disruption in Bairhana

Meanwhile, electricity officials announced that several parts of the Bairhana area would experience a six-hour power shutdown on Tuesday as part of a planned maintenance programme.

Under the Prayagraj Bairhana Electricity Centre’s maintenance plan, supply from the 33 KV Bairhana feeder will remain suspended to facilitate repair and upgrading work.

As a result, electricity supply in areas including Sohbatiyabagh, Bairhana, Talab, Lakheri, Laskar Ganj and Madhwapur is expected to remain affected for several hours.

Authorities have appealed to consumers to cooperate and complete any essential work in advance.

Electricity Department Assures Quick Resolution

Officials from the electricity department said repair work and system maintenance are being carried out continuously to improve supply conditions and address technical faults.

The department has assured residents that complaints are being attended to on priority, and that efforts are underway to stabilise the power supply in the affected areas.

However, residents say the recurring outages and technical failures have highlighted the urgent need to strengthen the city’s ageing power infrastructure, particularly in the densely populated old city areas where electricity demand rises sharply during the summer months.
