Oregon School Tragedy: Three Children Among Four Dead as Bystander Stops Teen Gunman
A deadly attack at an elementary school in Bend left two more victims critically injured. The 16-year-old suspect died after an unidentified community member confronted the armed teenager inside the building.
BEND, OREGON: A school day in the Oregon city of Bend turned into a deadly emergency on Thursday, October 15, when gunfire at Silver Rail Elementary School claimed the lives of four people, including three young children.
The suspected attacker, a 16-year-old resident, was also killed after a bystander intervened inside the building, police said.
The youngest victims were just five and eight years old, while the third child was 11, according to a report by The Associated Press.
A teacher was also among those killed. Two other people — a seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher — suffered critical injuries and were rushed to St. Charles Medical Centre.
The circumstances surrounding the teenager’s decision to attack the school remain unclear. Police have not released the suspect’s name and were examining whether the teenager had any previous connection with the institution.
Citizen’s Intervention Brings Attack to an End
The incident began with reports of gunfire outside the school. Police Chief Mike Krantz said the first emergency call came in at 12.59 pm local time from a person travelling in a vehicle.
The caller reported being targeted by someone carrying a long gun. Several more calls reached emergency services shortly afterwards.
Investigators believe the suspect subsequently forced entry into the school by firing at doors that had been locked. The school initiated a lockdown at 1.01 pm as police rushed to the scene.
A crucial development emerged when officers learnt that a member of the public had followed the armed teenager into the building after witnessing the suspect’s entry.
The individual confronted the gunman and shot the teenager, according to the police account.
Responding officers later found the suspect dead. They then worked through the building to establish whether the danger had passed before attending to those who had been shot.
The intervention by the unidentified citizen became a central part of the initial police account of how the attack was brought to a halt. Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the encounter.
Children Moved to Safety After School Cleared
Once officers began securing the premises, students and school personnel were taken away from the scene.
Buses transported them to a nearby church, where arrangements were made for families to collect their children and reunite with relatives.
Police said the families of the victims had been informed. Officers checked individual classrooms and other areas to ensure no further threat remained inside the school.
The investigation is continuing, with authorities seeking to reconstruct the sequence of events, establish the suspect’s background and determine what led to the violence. Police Chief Krantz said further information would be released as the inquiry progresses.
Oregon Leaders Respond to the Deadly Violence
The shooting prompted expressions of grief and support from state and federal officials.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek appealed to residents to stand by one another as the community copes with the loss.
She also thanked the person who confronted the attacker, describing the intervention as an act that helped prevent additional deaths.
Kotek acknowledged that the experience could leave the individual carrying a substantial emotional burden.
Sheila Miller, communications manager for the Bend Police Department, said the city had never wanted to face a tragedy of this nature and described the incident as devastating.
Federal investigators also joined the response.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced on social media that the bureau was assisting local authorities at the scene. He said the agency would make the necessary resources available to support the investigation.
US Senator Jeff Merkley, who represents Oregon, expressed sympathy for the residents of Bend as the city confronted the aftermath of the shooting.
School Serves Hundreds of Young Students
Silver Rail Elementary School caters to children from kindergarten through fifth grade. Reuters reported that approximately 450 students and 40 staff members are associated with the school.
Bend has a population of around 100,000 and is situated roughly 100 miles (160 kilometres) southeast of Portland, according to The Associated Press.
Authorities have yet to establish all the details surrounding the attack. The suspect’s identity, possible links to the school and the precise circumstances that led to the shooting remain among the matters under investigation.

इसी दौरान अधिकारियों को पता चला कि एक नागरिक ने किशोर को स्कूल में प्रवेश करते देखा था और उसके पीछे-पीछे इमारत के भीतर चला गया। पुलिस के अनुसार, उस व्यक्ति ने हमलावर को चुनौती दी और गोली चलाई। बाद में मौके पर पहुंचे पुलिसकर्मियों को किशोर मृत मिला।

एपी की रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक, बेंड शहर की आबादी लगभग एक लाख है और यह पोर्टलैंड से करीब 100 मील यानी 160 किलोमीटर दक्षिण-पूर्व में स्थित है।
पुलिस के सामने अब भी कई सवाल हैं। संदिग्ध की पहचान, स्कूल से उसका संभावित संबंध और हमले की वजह का पता लगाने के लिए जांच जारी है। अधिकारियों के अनुसार, घटनाक्रम की पूरी तस्वीर सामने आने में अभी समय लग सकता है।
