Mary Millben Targets CJP Over Alleged US Funding as Two Leaders Are Sent to Jail
Subheading: The American singer calls for a peaceful counter-movement against the Cockroach Janata Party; police accuse two of its leaders of violating peace bonds and entering a restricted protest site
NEW DELHI: A political controversy surrounding the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has taken two distinct turns, with American singer Mary Millben questioning the organisation’s alleged financial backing from the United States and Delhi Police taking action against two of its leaders over a protest-related incident.
Millben, a vocal supporter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has called on Indian youth to organise a peaceful response to the group.
In a post on X, she alleged that individuals in the US opposed to Modi were financing CJP and its founder, Abhijeet Dipke.
Her post did not identify the alleged donors or provide documentary evidence for the claim.
Arguing that India should resist attempts to disrupt its political and developmental progress, Millben urged young people educated and raised in the country to take the lead in defending democratic institutions.
She advocated a peaceful counter-movement, maintaining that organised public action had a role in protecting freedom and democracy.
She also alleged that foreign-backed efforts to destabilise governments followed a recurring pattern in different countries.
According to her, people educated in America were sometimes encouraged to return to their countries and promote disruptive activities with financial support.
These assertions were made by Millben and have not been independently established in the information available.
Singer renews praise for Prime Minister
Millben’s latest remarks follow a series of public statements in which she has praised Modi.
Earlier this month, she congratulated him on completing 25 years in public service and described his political journey in strongly favourable terms. She also called for greater unity among India’s communities.
Her political commentary has extended beyond domestic Indian affairs. In August, she criticised opposition to a planned Madison Square Garden event featuring Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat.
She also took aim at New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, alleging that opposition to the programme was driven by hostility towards Modi and the BJP.
Last year, Millben referred to Modi as a friend and commended his leadership in India and abroad. She has previously described her interactions with him as personally inspiring.
Dipke rejects questions over education funding
The financial background of CJP and Dipke has previously attracted scrutiny. Surat-based Right to Information activist Amit Tiwari raised questions about how Dipke paid for his studies at Boston University in the United States.
Questions were also raised about a proposed ₹1 crore legal defence fund associated with senior advocate Kapil Sibal.
Dipke denied wrongdoing and said his university education had been financed through a scholarship and an education loan. These explanations form part of his response to the questions raised about his finances.
Millben’s allegation of US-based financial support for CJP is a separate claim. No supporting evidence was presented in her social media post, and the allegation should not be treated as proof of improper funding.
Police action follows Jantar Mantar episode
Separately, Delhi Police said CJP members Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka had been sent to five days of judicial custody on Wednesday and lodged in Tihar Jail.
The action followed allegations that they had breached peace bonds and entered Jantar Mantar without authorisation, despite the site no longer being designated for protests.
Their associate Ajinkya Shinde was released after furnishing a personal bond and a surety of ₹5,000. Police said he had been directed to maintain peace and good behaviour for six months.
According to the police account, the three men were brought before a Special Executive Magistrate on Wednesday morning.
Das and Ranka had been detained early Tuesday after allegedly crossing barricades and entering the area without permission.
Police further alleged that the group raised slogans demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and put up a national flag at the location.
The custody order and the police allegations concern the Jantar Mantar incident, while Millben’s comments centre on the organisation’s alleged funding and political activities.
The two developments have placed CJP under renewed public scrutiny, but the funding allegation remains unsubstantiated in the material available.
