BJP, Congress Clash Over Delhi Protests as ‘Regime Change’ Row Escalates

Rajnath Singh accuses Opposition parties of encouraging disorder under the pretext of electoral reform, while Congress defends efforts to replace the government as a legitimate part of democratic politics.

LUCKNOW: A political confrontation over protests in Delhi intensified on Friday, with the BJP accusing the Congress and its allies of attempting to destabilise the government by emulating Bangladesh’s recent political upheaval.

The Congress rejected the criticism, arguing that challenging an incumbent government is a legitimate function of the Opposition in a democracy.

The controversy centres on demonstrations demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

BJP leaders alleged that the campaign had moved beyond electoral concerns and was aimed at provoking unrest, while Congress leaders defended the Opposition’s right to challenge those in power.

Rajnath Singh accuses Opposition of fuelling unrest

Addressing a press conference at the BJP’s Uttar Pradesh headquarters in Lucknow, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh accused the Congress and its political partners of using young people to advance a campaign that, he claimed, could undermine democratic institutions.

Singh referred to public statements by some participants in the protests about drawing inspiration from Bangladesh and seeking a change of government.

He argued that such remarks indicated an effort to turn demonstrations into a wider political confrontation rather than channel young people’s energy into constructive activities and nation-building.

Aiming at Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Singh said democratic freedoms could not be treated as permission to disrupt public life, undermine constitutional institutions or obstruct national development.

He also criticised Gandhi for carrying a copy of the Constitution while, according to the minister, engaging in politics that risked creating disorder.

Singh urged the Congress leader to respect the electorate’s verdict and reconsider his political approach, rather than pursue what he described as disruptive tactics in the name of defending democracy.

BJP leadership intensifies its attack

BJP president Nitin Nabin joined the criticism through a post on X, claiming that references to regime change had revealed the Opposition’s real intentions.

He alleged, without presenting evidence in the post, that the movement was part of an attempt to destabilise India with assistance from foreign forces and associated the campaign with what he termed “Urban Naxals”.

Nabin maintained that the Opposition was not genuinely concerned about electoral reforms, the SIR exercise or young people’s future.

Instead, he accused its leaders of seeking political power through disorder, arguing that elections and public support—not street confrontations—were the legitimate route to government.

Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Manohar Lal also criticised Rahul Gandhi and the INDIA bloc.

Goyal argued that repeated electoral setbacks had prompted the Opposition to pursue political change through street protests rather than democratic contests.

He further accused its leaders of placing dynastic interests above the country’s institutional stability.

Manohar Lal, meanwhile, said attempts to create instability under the banner of regime change would not be acceptable.

Statements by protest participants trigger controversy

The BJP’s allegations followed remarks by lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan, who had publicly supported the demand for regime change during a press conference in Delhi.

Bhushan argued that seeking a change of government was not inherently objectionable.

The controversy was also fuelled by a video message from student activist Neha Bora to the Socialist Students’ Front in Bangladesh.

Bora referred to the youth-led movement in Bangladesh as an inspiration for young people in India and expressed solidarity with students campaigning for democratic and voting rights.

She spoke of the possibility of Indian and Bangladeshi youth working together for democratic progress and a better future for South Asia.

BJP leaders cited these statements to support their contention that some protest organisers were looking beyond electoral reform towards a broader political confrontation.

The Opposition’s campaign has focused on the electoral roll revision exercise and demands for accountability from the Election Commission.

The BJP, however, has portrayed the protests as an attempt to challenge the elected government outside the conventional electoral process.

Rajnath Singh raises 2009 Election Commission controversy

During his interaction with reporters, Singh also referred to a dispute involving the Election Commission in 2009.

He said then Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami had written to the President seeking the removal of Election Commissioner Navin Chawla, alleging that Chawla had shared confidential information with Congress leaders.

Singh claimed the Congress had defended Chawla and subsequently supported his appointment as Chief Election Commissioner because of his alleged proximity to the Nehru-Gandhi family.

His remarks sought to question the Congress’s position on the independence and functioning of the poll panel.

Congress invokes Pranab Mukherjee to defend Opposition’s role

The Congress responded by arguing that seeking a change of government is an established feature of democratic politics.

Jairam Ramesh, the party’s communications in-charge, cited former President Pranab Mukherjee, recalling his formulation that the Opposition’s responsibility is to “oppose, expose, and depose”.

Congress media department chief Pawan Khera also invoked Mukherjee’s words, arguing that opposition parties across democratic systems seek to replace governments through political competition.

He pointed out that the BJP itself had campaigned to dislodge the Congress-led government before coming to power in 2014.

Khera questioned why the BJP appeared surprised by the Opposition’s demand for a change in government, contending that the ability to challenge and replace those in office is integral to the democratic process.

The exchange highlights a widening political dispute over the boundary between legitimate protest and attempts to destabilise an elected government.

While the BJP has portrayed the demonstrations as a threat to institutional stability, the Congress insists that opposition to the ruling establishment is a democratic responsibility.

The central issues remain the electoral roll revision process, the Election Commission’s accountability and the political consequences of the protests.
