India Raises Security Concerns After US Uncovers Alleged Plot Against Hindu Temple

New Delhi presses Washington to protect the Indian diaspora after investigators allege that a 19-year-old suspect planned a shooting at a place of Hindu worship in Illinois.

India has called for stronger protection of its citizens in the United States following an alleged plan to carry out a shooting at a Hindu temple in Illinois.

The case has drawn particular attention in New Delhi because American investigators reportedly believe the suspected attacker was driven by racial hatred directed at Indians and other minority communities.

The Ministry of External Affairs has urged Washington to ensure that Indian nationals can live and worship without fear.

Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday that the reported threat against the Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple in Aurora was a serious concern.

While acknowledging the action taken by US authorities, he stressed the need for measures that would prevent similar incidents.

India had voiced its concern a day earlier, describing the alleged targeting of a Hindu place of worship as racist and anti-Hindu.

The government called for a full investigation and prosecution of anyone found responsible. Jaiswal also warned that the episode had intensified concerns about anti-Indian prejudice and racially motivated hostility in the US.

Co-workers’ warning led to investigation

The investigation centres on Alexandros Paporakis, a 19-year-old arrested in Palatine, near Chicago, on October 11.

Authorities reportedly began looking into his activities after colleagues alerted them to messages they considered disturbing.

Prosecutors allege that the teenager had been contemplating an attack on the Aurora temple for roughly two months.

The religious complex, situated around 65 kilometres from downtown Chicago, is a place of worship for Hindu devotees in the region.

According to the prosecution’s account, the suspected plan moved towards execution on October 11, when Paporakis allegedly tried to fire at a man from a vehicle.

The weapon reportedly malfunctioned. Investigators also claim he had spoken to colleagues about killing Indian people and had attached particular significance to Sunday.

These claims form part of the allegations against him and have not yet been established through a trial.

Weapons and writings seized during search

The investigation has also focused on a document attributed to the suspect and described in court records as “Why I Fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto)”.

Authorities reportedly believe the text reflects neo-Nazi and white supremacist thinking, with hostility directed at people of South Asian descent and other minority groups.

Records cited by the Chicago Sun-Times describe the document as containing language about hatred and fantasies of mass killing.

Investigators allege that it discussed violence against Indians, Jewish people and African Americans. The document’s contents are part of the evidence being examined by authorities.

A search of the suspect’s home reportedly uncovered a rifle, loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and a tactical vest containing protective armour. Police also found a patch bearing imagery linked to white supremacist extremism.

Investigators have indicated that the available evidence points to the possibility that Paporakis acted without accomplices. Officials have not, however, declared the investigation complete.

Serious charges and further court proceedings

Paporakis has been charged with making a terrorist threat, a Class X felony under the relevant US classification, as well as unlawful weapons possession.

A judge ordered him to remain in custody after a hearing, and he is expected back in court on October 30.

The case has raised questions about the security of religious institutions and the risks posed by extremist hatred.

India’s response has gone beyond expressing concern over the specific alleged plot: it has called for preventive action to protect Indian nationals and ensure that threats against communities are investigated thoroughly.

For New Delhi, the central concern is the safety of Indians living in America and the freedom to practise their religion without intimidation.

The allegations against the teenager will be tested through the US legal process, but India has made clear that any racially or religiously motivated violence against its community demands a serious response.

अदालत के रिकॉर्ड में इसका शीर्षक “Why I Fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto)” दर्ज बताया गया है।
