NIA Arrests Suspected JMB Operative in Bengal, Takes Him to Assam on Transit Remand
SOUTH DINAJPUR: A cross-state investigation into suspected militant links culminated in the arrest of Mujibur Rahman in West Bengal on Saturday, with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) subsequently taking him to Assam for further investigation.
The agency secured transit remand for Rahman from the Gangarampur Sub-Divisional Court before leaving for Assam later that night.
NIA investigators suspect that he has links with Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), an organisation associated with militant activities, and its alleged operational network in Assam.
The arrest followed a sequence of searches and questioning involving West Bengal police and the central agency.
According to police officials, Rahman and his wife were traced to a hideout in Bihar after investigators received a tip-off.
They were brought to Banshihari police station on Thursday night and questioned until Friday night. They were subsequently released temporarily but remained under close police surveillance.
An NIA team comprising four officials arrived at the police station on Saturday morning after being informed of the developments.
Later in the day, investigators went to Rahman’s residence in the Kushkari area of Banshihari, where questioning continued for several hours. The agency arrested him later that evening.
The latest operation followed an earlier attempt to locate Rahman. On September 29, an NIA team searched his residence while he was reportedly evading arrest. Officers also questioned members of his family during that operation.
NIA sources said investigators suspected Rahman of maintaining active links with JMB and its Assam module. His arrest followed the questioning, although the allegations will need to be tested through the investigation and legal process.
A police officer said local investigators had located the suspects in Bihar and coordinated with the central agency, leading to Rahman’s formal arrest.
Further investigation is under way to establish the nature and extent of the alleged links and to determine whether other individuals were involved.

दक्षिण दिनाजपुर: संदिग्ध आतंकी संपर्कों की जांच के सिलसिले में राष्ट्रीय जांच एजेंसी (NIA) ने पश्चिम बंगाल में मुजीबुर रहमान को शनिवार को गिरफ्तार कर लिया। गिरफ्तारी के बाद एजेंसी उसे आगे की पूछताछ के लिए असम ले गई।
रहमान को गंगारामपुर उपमंडलीय अदालत में पेश किया गया, जहां से NIA ने ट्रांजिट रिमांड हासिल की।
इसके बाद एजेंसी की टीम शनिवार रात उसे लेकर असम के लिए रवाना हो गई। जांचकर्ताओं को संदेह है कि रहमान के प्रतिबंधित संगठन जमात-उल-मुजाहिदीन बांग्लादेश (JMB) और उसके कथित असम मॉड्यूल से संबंध हैं।
यह गिरफ्तारी कई दिनों तक चली तलाशी और पूछताछ की कार्रवाई के बाद हुई। पुलिस अधिकारियों के मुताबिक, एक गुप्त सूचना मिलने पर पश्चिम बंगाल पुलिस ने रहमान और उसकी पत्नी का पता बिहार में एक ठिकाने पर लगाया।
दोनों को गुरुवार रात बंशिहारी थाने लाया गया, जहां शुक्रवार रात तक पूछताछ की गई। इसके बाद उन्हें अस्थायी रूप से छोड़ दिया गया, लेकिन पुलिस की कड़ी निगरानी जारी रही।
सूचना मिलने पर असम से NIA के चार अधिकारियों की टीम शनिवार सुबह बंशिहारी थाने पहुंची। बाद में जांचकर्ता बंशिहारी के कुशकारी इलाके में स्थित रहमान के घर पहुंचे और कई घंटे तक पूछताछ की। इसी कार्रवाई के बाद एजेंसी ने उसे गिरफ्तार कर लिया।
इससे पहले 29 सितंबर को भी NIA की टीम ने रहमान के घर पर तलाशी ली थी। उस समय वह कथित तौर पर गिरफ्तारी से बच रहा था। अधिकारियों ने उस दौरान उसके परिवार के सदस्यों से भी पूछताछ की थी।
NIA सूत्रों के अनुसार, जांचकर्ताओं को संदेह है कि रहमान JMB और उसके कथित असम नेटवर्क के संपर्क में सक्रिय रूप से बना हुआ था। पूछताछ के बाद उसकी गिरफ्तारी की गई है। हालांकि, इन आरोपों की पुष्टि जांच और न्यायिक प्रक्रिया के दौरान उपलब्ध साक्ष्यों के आधार पर ही होगी।
एक पुलिस अधिकारी ने बताया कि स्थानीय पुलिस ने बिहार में संदिग्धों का पता लगाने के बाद केंद्रीय एजेंसी के साथ समन्वय किया, जिसके परिणामस्वरूप रहमान की औपचारिक गिरफ्तारी हुई।
पुलिस और NIA अब कथित संपर्कों की प्रकृति तथा उनके दायरे का पता लगाने में जुटी हैं। जांच में यह भी पता लगाया जाएगा कि इस मामले में अन्य लोग शामिल हैं या नहीं।
