Chorbagan Stampede: Suvendu Adhikari Orders Action Over Fake Videos, Announces Wider Probe
KOLKATA: The West Bengal government has announced action against people accused of circulating misleading videos about the deadly Chorbagan stampede, as authorities face questions over the tragedy that claimed 19 lives during Durga Puja celebrations in north Kolkata.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Tuesday that investigators had identified 135 people allegedly involved in sharing or endorsing videos linked to the incident.
He directed the police to take legal action under non-bailable provisions against those found responsible.
Adhikari also alleged that some of the material originated in Bangladesh before being circulated by social media users in different parts of West Bengal.
The stampede occurred at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja venue at around 7.40 pm on October 17.
Besides the 19 fatalities, 25 people sustained injuries.
Adhikari visited the victims’ families on Tuesday before addressing the media, questioning why fabricated or misleading content was being circulated while the authorities were dealing with the aftermath.
The government’s announcement came after the West Bengal Police Special Task Force arrested a man in Cooch Behar district on suspicion of spreading false information online about the number of people killed in the incident.
The arrest forms part of the police response to alleged misinformation surrounding the tragedy.
Questions have also been raised about the availability of CCTV recordings from the location where an announcement was made during the incident.
Adhikari declined to reveal all the material in the government’s possession, saying an appointed Special Investigation Team would examine the evidence.
He said he had received substantial footage but would leave the investigation to the designated team.
Alongside the police investigation, the state is preparing a broader inquiry into how the tragedy unfolded and what changes may be needed to prevent a recurrence.
Adhikari said the government was seeking the consent of a retired judge to lead the inquiry.
The proposed panel is expected to include the principal secretary of the state disaster management department, representatives of the West Bengal Police and the National Disaster Response Force.
The inquiry will have a dual responsibility: establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and injuries, and recommend improvements to crowd management and public safety ahead of next year’s Durga Puja.
Adhikari said the lessons from the incident should lead to lasting changes rather than short-term corrective measures.
The handling of the injured has also become a subject of debate.
At a press conference at Swastha Bhawan, the state health department headquarters, Adhikari responded to criticism from some doctors at Calcutta Medical College over the transfer of injured people to a private hospital.
The Chief Minister said the health department had been asked to check whether the doctors who spoke publicly were on duty when the incident occurred.
He defended the decision to transfer some patients, arguing that the private facility offered better treatment capacity than the government hospital could provide at that time.
Adhikari maintained that the immediate priority had been to save lives. He credited doctors, nurses and ambulance drivers for their efforts on the night of the stampede and said the injured who were taken for treatment survived.
He also acknowledged that bringing the government hospital’s facilities up to the standard of the private institution would require substantial time, estimating that the process could take around 18 months.
The tragedy has put the spotlight on crowd control, emergency response and the handling of public information during major religious gatherings.
The proposed inquiry is expected to examine the incident in detail and offer recommendations intended to strengthen arrangements for future Durga Puja celebrations.
