SRN Hospital Clash: Three-Member SIT Formed to Probe Alleged Assault on Lawyer and Medical Staff
PRAYAGRAJ: A special investigation team (SIT) has been constituted to investigate allegations of assault involving an advocate, a doctor and medical students at the trauma centre of SRN Hospital in Prayagraj.
The police administration formed the three-member team late Tuesday night to examine complaints filed by both sides and establish the sequence of events.
The team, comprising an inspector and two sub-inspectors, will function under the supervision of an assistant commissioner of police (ACP).
Investigators will collect evidence, examine the allegations and reconstruct the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. Further legal action will be determined by the findings of the inquiry.
Additional Commissioner of Police Vijay Dhull said separate cases had been registered on the complaints of both parties.
Given the seriousness of the allegations and the conflicting accounts of the incident, the SIT has been assigned the task of conducting a comprehensive and impartial investigation.
The controversy dates back to the night of October 22, when a dispute reportedly broke out over medical treatment at the hospital’s trauma centre. Advocate Sarvesh Shukla and his driver were allegedly assaulted during the altercation.
The incident subsequently became a source of tension between sections of the legal fraternity and medical personnel.
Angered by what they described as a lack of appropriate legal action despite the registration of a case, lawyers organised a protest on Monday.
The demonstration escalated into a road blockade stretching from the hospital gate to Mahatma Gandhi Marg, disrupting traffic across parts of the city.
The agitation also affected hospital operations, with outpatient department (OPD) services and emergency care reportedly facing disruptions.
The protest took a further turn when Dr Vibhu Mishra, an assistant professor at the medical college, accused members of the legal community of assault and looting.
Acting on his complaint, police registered another case at George Town police station on Monday night.
Allegations were also raised over the assault of eight medical students during the incident.
With both sides presenting serious accusations, the matter has developed into a wider dispute requiring a detailed examination of the available evidence.
Police officials held discussions with a delegation of lawyers on Tuesday.
The formation of the SIT is expected to bring both cases under a coordinated investigation, with officers examining the complaints, corroborating evidence and the roles of those allegedly involved.
The investigation will be crucial in determining responsibility for the reported violence and establishing whether the allegations made by either side are supported by evidence.
Police have said that further legal proceedings will follow the findings of the SIT.
