Kharge Slams Government Over Action Against Student Protesters, Raises NEET Issue in Rajya Sabha
New Delhi: Launching a sharp attack on the Centre over the police action against student protesters at Jantar Mantar, Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday accused the government of using force against young demonstrators demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged examination irregularities.
The uproar over the issue disrupted proceedings in the Rajya Sabha during the Monsoon Session, forcing the Chair to adjourn the House first till 12 noon and later again till 2 pm after Kharge raised concerns over the alleged National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) paper leak and the treatment meted out to students during the protest.
Expressing his anguish in a message posted on his official account on social media platform X, Kharge described the previous day’s events as deeply disturbing.
He alleged that students protesting against the alleged paper leak and demanding accountability in the NEET examination were subjected to baton charges, tear gas and physical assault while exercising their democratic right to protest.
As a mark of solidarity with the agitating students and in protest against the police action, the Congress president decided not to celebrate his birthday on Tuesday.
Party leaders said the decision reflected his concern over the situation faced by students protesting for transparency in the examination system.
The controversy erupted after thousands of people assembled at Jantar Mantar on Monday ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)‘s proposed march to Parliament seeking the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The gathering witnessed heavy security arrangements as authorities moved to prevent the procession from advancing towards Parliament.
Police personnel later used batons to disperse sections of the crowd after the demonstration intensified.
The Delhi Police had earlier declined permission for the proposed march and imposed prohibitory orders in parts of New Delhi, citing security and law-and-order concerns.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Kharge said the issue was not merely political but directly linked to the future of lakhs of students across the country.
He alleged that instead of addressing their concerns, the government had chosen to suppress their voices through force.
According to him, thousands of students had gathered at Jantar Mantar to seek justice over examination-related issues, but were met with police action rather than a constructive response from the authorities.

नई दिल्ली: जंतर-मंतर पर छात्र प्रदर्शन के दौरान हुई पुलिस कार्रवाई को लेकर कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष और राज्यसभा में नेता प्रतिपक्ष मल्लिकार्जुन खड़गे ने मंगलवार को केंद्र सरकार पर तीखा हमला बोला।
उन्होंने आरोप लगाया कि प्रतियोगी परीक्षाओं में कथित अनियमितताओं के विरोध में केंद्रीय शिक्षा मंत्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान के इस्तीफे की मांग कर रहे छात्रों की आवाज को बल प्रयोग के जरिए दबाने का प्रयास किया गया।
इस मुद्दे को लेकर संसद के मानसून सत्र के दौरान राज्यसभा में जोरदार हंगामा हुआ। खड़गे द्वारा राष्ट्रीय पात्रता सह प्रवेश परीक्षा (नीट-यूजी) से जुड़े कथित प्रश्नपत्र लीक और छात्रों पर हुई कार्रवाई का मामला उठाए जाने के बाद सदन की कार्यवाही पहले दोपहर 12 बजे तक और उसके बाद पुनः दोपहर 2 बजे तक स्थगित करनी पड़ी।
सोशल मीडिया मंच एक्स पर जारी अपने संदेश में कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष ने सोमवार की घटनाओं को अत्यंत दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण बताया।
उन्होंने आरोप लगाया कि प्रश्नपत्र लीक और नीट परीक्षा में कथित गड़बड़ियों के खिलाफ शांतिपूर्ण ढंग से आवाज उठा रहे छात्रों पर लाठीचार्ज किया गया, आंसू गैस के गोले छोड़े गए और उनके साथ मारपीट की गई, जबकि वे लोकतांत्रिक तरीके से अपना विरोध दर्ज करा रहे थे।
घटना पर गहरा दुख व्यक्त करते हुए खड़गे ने मंगलवार को अपना जन्मदिन नहीं मनाने का निर्णय लिया। कांग्रेस नेताओं के अनुसार उन्होंने यह फैसला छात्रों के प्रति एकजुटता व्यक्त करने और पुलिस कार्रवाई के विरोध स्वरूप लिया।
सोमवार को कॉकरोच जनता पार्टी (सीजेपी) द्वारा केंद्रीय शिक्षा मंत्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान के इस्तीफे की मांग को लेकर प्रस्तावित संसद मार्च से पहले हजारों लोग जंतर-मंतर पर एकत्र हुए थे।
प्रदर्शन को देखते हुए पूरे क्षेत्र में सुरक्षा व्यवस्था कड़ी कर दी गई थी और संसद की ओर बढ़ने की कोशिश को रोकने के लिए व्यापक पुलिस बंदोबस्त किए गए थे।
बाद में प्रदर्शन तेज होने पर पुलिस ने भीड़ को तितर-बितर करने के लिए लाठीचार्ज किया। इससे पहले दिल्ली पुलिस ने प्रस्तावित मार्च की अनुमति देने से इनकार कर दिया था और नई दिल्ली के कई हिस्सों में निषेधाज्ञा लागू कर दी थी।
पुलिस का कहना था कि यह कदम सुरक्षा और कानून-व्यवस्था बनाए रखने के उद्देश्य से उठाया गया।
राज्यसभा में अपनी बात रखते हुए मल्लिकार्जुन खड़गे ने कहा कि यह केवल राजनीतिक मुद्दा नहीं, बल्कि देश के लाखों विद्यार्थियों के भविष्य से जुड़ा सवाल है।
उन्होंने आरोप लगाया कि न्याय की मांग लेकर जंतर-मंतर पहुंचे हजारों छात्रों की समस्याओं का समाधान खोजने के बजाय सरकार ने उनकी आवाज को दबाने का रास्ता चुना।
उनके अनुसार विद्यार्थियों की चिंताओं को गंभीरता से सुनने के बजाय उन पर बल प्रयोग किया गया, जो लोकतांत्रिक मूल्यों के अनुरूप नहीं है।
