Amit Shah Promises Uniform Civil Code in UP if BJP Wins Next Year’s Assembly Election

Addressing the BJP’s state executive meeting, the Home Minister outlines the party’s UCC agenda as state leaders call for stronger booth-level organisation and wider public outreach ahead of the electoral contest.

LUCKNOW, October 30: The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has emerged as a major political commitment in the BJP’s preparations for the next Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah declaring that the party would introduce the proposed common civil law in the state if it secures another term in office.

Announcing the Uttar Pradesh BJP’s state executive committee meeting on Friday, Shah told party leaders and workers that implementing the UCC would be among the steps taken by a BJP government after returning to power.

He pointed out that several states had already adopted the measure and said Uttar Pradesh would follow the same path under the party’s next government.

The declaration gives the proposed civil law fresh prominence in the state’s political debate as parties begin positioning themselves for the Assembly elections scheduled next year.

The daylong meeting, attended by senior state leaders, members of the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet and representatives of the BJP’s regional and district organisations, was convened to assess the party’s political position and prepare an organisational strategy for the coming electoral battle.

BJP seeks to frame election around competing political visions

State BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary sought to establish the political framework for the forthcoming contest, describing it as a choice between development and destruction, as well as nationalism and caste-based politics.

In his address to party colleagues, Chaudhary urged them to confront opposition criticism with verifiable information rather than allow the BJP to be placed on the defensive.

He accused opposition parties of lacking a coherent political programme and said their approach relied heavily on allegations, confusion and personal attacks instead of discussions on governance and public welfare.

Referring to recent political exchanges involving Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chaudhary criticised what he described as inappropriate language directed at the Prime Minister’s family.

He argued that such incidents reflected the opposition’s political approach.

The state BJP chief also targeted the Samajwadi Party, Congress and other opposition formations, alleging that their political campaigns were increasingly driven by criticism of the ruling establishment rather than constructive policy proposals.

Party raises concern over social media campaigns

Chaudhary also warned party workers about what he described as attempts by anti-national elements to create divisions within society.

He alleged that young people were being misled through online campaigns and that foreign funding was being used to promote hostility and instability.

He accused opposition parties of exploiting social media platforms to circulate negative narratives against the government.

These assertions formed part of his appeal to BJP workers to counter political messaging with facts and maintain contact with people across different sections of society.

Booth-level organisation becomes BJP’s priority

Alongside its political messaging, the BJP leadership has placed considerable emphasis on strengthening the party’s machinery at the grassroots level.

Chaudhary asked office-bearers to evaluate their preparedness by examining four organisational issues: whether party representatives were regularly visiting every polling booth, whether booth committees were functioning effectively, whether designated office-bearers were fulfilling their responsibilities, and whether local leaders were maintaining direct contact with residents.

He made it clear that electoral preparation could not be confined to meetings at the state headquarters and that party workers needed to remain visible and accessible in their respective areas.

The BJP leadership also called for a broader outreach campaign encompassing different social and economic groups.

Party workers were asked to engage with upper-caste communities, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, backward and most backward classes, farmers, young voters and women.

Chaudhary stressed that strengthening relationships with party workers was equally important.

He advised senior leaders to spend more time listening to grassroots representatives, understand their difficulties and maintain regular communication with them.

The Lucknow meeting, with Shah’s announcement on the Uniform Civil Code as its most prominent political message, underscored the BJP’s attempt to combine its ideological agenda with booth-level mobilisation and a wider social outreach strategy ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
