Indian Talent in Growing Demand Abroad, Germany Seeks More Workers Than Expected: Piyush Goyal
NEW DELHI: India’s growing importance as a source of skilled manpower is becoming increasingly evident in international labour markets, with Germany indicating that its requirement for Indian workers could be substantially higher than previously estimated, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday.
Sharing details of a conversation with Germany’s Foreign Minister, Goyal said he had mentioned an annual requirement of 90,000 Indian workers during their meeting.
The German minister, however, suggested that the country’s demand was considerably greater.
The minister made these observations while addressing a national conference organised by the Institute for Studies in Industrial Development (ISID) and the Indian Development Review Association (IDRA) in New Delhi.
Goyal used the occasion to reflect on the changing international reputation of Indians.
He said the experience of Indian travellers and professionals overseas had undergone a remarkable transformation, with the country now commanding considerably greater recognition and respect than in earlier decades.
The change, he suggested, was reflective of India’s expanding economic influence and the growing acceptance of its skilled workforce in international markets.
German universities attract a growing Indian student community
The expanding engagement between India and Germany is not confined to employment opportunities. German higher education institutions are also witnessing a rising presence of Indian students.
Figures cited by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) India indicate that Indian enrolment increased by approximately 10,400 in a single year.
The figures, reported by The PIE News, underline the growing appeal of Germany among young Indians seeking international education.
The country’s universities have a combined student population of around 2.86 million. Of these, 516,820 are international students, representing nearly 18 per cent of total enrolment.
Indians account for 13.5 per cent of the overseas student community in Germany and approximately 2.4 per cent of the entire university population.
DAAD India has described this growing participation as an encouraging development in educational and scientific cooperation between the two countries.
Indian students are increasingly attracted not only by academic qualifications but also by opportunities to participate in research, explore new technologies and build careers with international exposure.
Low-cost university education strengthens Germany’s appeal
The financial accessibility of German higher education has contributed to its popularity among Indian applicants.
Unlike many other international destinations, most public universities in Germany do not levy regular tuition fees. Students generally pay semester-related contributions, although certain institutions and specialised courses have separate fee structures.
This relatively affordable model, combined with research facilities and international academic exposure, has made Germany an attractive option for students who want a foreign qualification without bearing the high education costs associated with several other countries.
Traditional Indian skills may offer protection against AI
While overseas employment and education are opening new avenues for Indian talent, Goyal also drew attention to the challenges that technological change could create for the domestic workforce.
Speaking in Berlin on Friday, he said the Commerce Ministry was examining occupations that might remain relatively insulated from the expansion of artificial intelligence.
He pointed towards India’s traditional strengths in handicrafts, handloom production, food and culinary expertise, and tourism.
These sectors, he suggested, derive much of their value from human creativity, cultural knowledge and personal interaction, making them potentially less vulnerable to complete automation.
The exercise to identify such occupations is intended to help policymakers anticipate changes in the employment market and prepare young people for careers that could remain relevant as AI becomes more deeply integrated into economic activity.
Goyal’s observations reflect a two-pronged approach to India’s changing employment landscape: enabling skilled Indians to access opportunities in international markets while preserving and strengthening professions rooted in human ability, craftsmanship and cultural identity.
