Muhammad Ali’s Extraordinary Journey Comes Alive in Prime Video Series ‘The Greatest’, Premiering November 4

Eight-part authorised biographical drama explores the boxing legend’s rise from Olympic champion Cassius Clay to global icon Muhammad Ali, examining his sporting triumphs, personal life and defiance of political convention.

The life of Muhammad Ali, whose influence extended far beyond the boxing ring, is set to receive a major television treatment, with Amazon Prime Video preparing the worldwide release of its biographical drama The Greatest on November 4, 2026.

All eight episodes of the series will be made available to viewers globally on the same day.

The production marks the first authorised scripted television project based on Ali’s life, developed in association with his estate.

Created by Ben Watkins, the series has been shaped through direct collaboration with those entrusted with preserving the boxing icon’s legacy.

Ali’s widow, Lonnie Ali, and Hollywood actor Michael B. Jordan are among its executive producers.

Rather than attempting to cover the legendary boxer’s entire life, the drama concentrates on the years that established his identity and changed the course of his career.

Its story opens with his gold-medal triumph at the 1960 Rome Olympics, when he was still known as Cassius Clay, and moves towards his historic 1964 heavyweight championship victory over Sonny Liston.

Alongside his emergence as a sporting phenomenon, the series explores the man behind the public persona.

His relationships, responsibilities as a husband and father, and encounters with the racial, political and cultural tensions of mid-twentieth-century America form important parts of the narrative.

Actor Jaalen Best has been cast in the challenging role of Muhammad Ali. Lonnie Ali personally assessed the actor’s suitability for the part and praised his ability to reproduce the boxer’s distinctive speech patterns, timing and expressive style.

The casting brings together several familiar faces, with Michael Ealy portraying civil rights leader Malcolm X, while Giovanni Ribisi takes on the role of Ali’s celebrated trainer Angelo Dundee.

Omari Hardwick and Dana Gourrier appear as Cassius Clay Sr. and Odessa Clay, the boxer’s parents, respectively. Amin Joseph portrays heavyweight rival Sonny Liston, whose confrontation with Ali became a defining moment in boxing history.

Born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. in 1942, Ali rose from a promising young fighter to become one of the most recognisable athletes and influential personalities of the twentieth century.

A three-time world heavyweight champion, he transformed boxing through his remarkable speed, movement, confidence and unconventional fighting technique.

His famous description of his style — ‘float like a butterfly, sting like a bee’ — became synonymous with his sporting identity.

His career produced some of boxing’s most memorable contests, including the ‘Fight of the Century’, his historic showdown with George Foreman in the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’, and the brutal Manila encounter with Joe Frazier, remembered as the ‘Thrilla in Manila’.

Yet Ali’s significance was never confined to championship belts. His decision to embrace Islam in 1964 and adopt the name Muhammad Ali marked a defining personal transformation.

Three years later, he refused to join the US military during the Vietnam War, invoking his religious convictions and opposition to the conflict.

The consequences were severe. He lost his heavyweight titles and was prevented from competing professionally for more than three years, a period that coincided with what should have been the prime of his athletic career.

Nevertheless, his stand against the war elevated him into an international figure associated with racial equality, Black empowerment, religious freedom and resistance to injustice.

Ali’s enduring appeal came from an unusual combination of extraordinary sporting ability, magnetic personality, sharp humour and an uncompromising willingness to defend his beliefs. His words could command attention as effectively as his performances inside the ring.

With The Greatest, Prime Video seeks to revisit the defining experiences that shaped this remarkable personality.

The eight-episode production promises to introduce a new generation of viewers to a man whose achievements in sport were matched by his courage to challenge the conventions of his time.
