A blaze in the mother and child health unit of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences turned a routine morning into a devastating disaster, with conflicting reports over the number of infants who died.
At least 14 newborn babies were killed after a fire swept through a nursery at one of Pakistan’s leading government hospitals in Islamabad on Wednesday, prompting an official investigation into one of the country’s worst recent hospital tragedies.
The disaster occurred in the mother and child health section of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), a major public healthcare facility in the capital. Local reports said the blaze began at around 7 am in a ward on the third floor.
The exact number of deaths remained unclear in the hours following the incident. Islamabad authorities confirmed 14 fatalities, while Geo TV reported that at least 15 newborns had died.
The number of infants present in the ward at the time of the fire was also reported differently by various officials and media organisations.
Early accounts suggested that one baby was rescued. According to reports, a doctor managed to save at least one infant from the affected ward.
Questions over how the fire started are now at the centre of the investigation.
Initial reports pointed to an air-conditioning unit, with rescue sources suggesting that a compressor may have exploded.
Hospital officials also raised the possibility of an electrical short circuit.
Authorities have not confirmed either explanation, and an inquiry committee has been constituted to establish the cause of the fire and examine the circumstances that allowed the tragedy to unfold.
Emergency services rushed to the hospital after the alarm was raised. Six fire engines and four ambulances were deployed, according to the Islamabad administration.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control, after which cooling operations continued to prevent a possible flare-up.
The affected area was subsequently sealed off as officials began examining the site.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the deaths and ordered an immediate investigation.
His office said responsibility should be fixed after the inquiry and those found responsible should face the strongest possible action.
The Islamabad administration has separately formed an inquiry committee headed by the additional deputy commissioner general.
The panel will investigate the cause of the fire as well as the sequence of events and possible lapses connected with the incident.
The tragedy has renewed scrutiny of safety standards at public hospitals in Pakistan.
State-run medical institutions play a crucial role in providing affordable treatment to large sections of the population but frequently face pressure from overcrowding, infrastructure constraints and shortages of resources.

हादसे के कारणों को लेकर अभी स्थिति स्पष्ट नहीं है। शुरुआती स्तर पर एयर-कंडीशनिंग सिस्टम में खराबी की आशंका जताई गई है।
कुछ बचावकर्मियों ने एयर-कंडीशनर के कंप्रेसर में विस्फोट को संभावित कारण बताया, जबकि अस्पताल की ओर से शॉर्ट सर्किट की संभावना भी व्यक्त की गई है।

आग पर नियंत्रण के बाद भी कुछ समय तक कूलिंग का काम जारी रखा गया।
